About William McKinley Betts

William Mckinley Betts (1/2/1899?) was married twice first to Nellie Mae Dixson? 12-24-21 they had Maudie, Bessie, Evelyn, William Mckinley Jr Married Sarah Jane Boone (8/2/12) (d. 3/27/08) 8-7-1934 They had Audra (pat), Johnny Logan or JL, Roger, Paul, Virginia, Colby, Charles, and Lester?

Nellie married William McKinley "Pete" Betts at her father's house in Jackson County. She said she did not want to get married, and had put Pete off for a year. She said she could not go to high school as the nearest one was 25 miles away, so she would have had to be boarded. To stall him, she told him he would have to be baptized.

Nellie's children were delivered by her mother, Callie. Nellie and Pete separated 7 April 1934, and he was granted a divorce in 1934 (in Woodruff County) on the grounds of mental and physical abuse. Ma's brand for cattle was bar B bar, a B with a line above and below the B.

o "Pete" was called Pete from the time he was born. When he started to school the family was told he needed a birth certificate and a name. They asked him what he wanted and he chose William Mckinley, because that was the name of the president. His grandchildren called him "Pa Pete." He did not serve in the military.

Pete and Nellie's first car was a Model T, and cost $575.25. He took it over to show off to Nellie's brother, "Dock." He and Pete were buddies. His brand for cattle was "B bar" which was a B with a line under the B. The pigs were marked with a notch off each ear and a hole in the right ear.

Pete played the piano. When he and "Ma" divorced he took the piano, but never played it again.

He was shot and killed by Edward Lemke. Lillian thinks Pa Pete's blood type was O positive.

!DEATH: "W.M. Betts Sr. Shot to Death Friday Morning," Wynne (Arkansas) Progress, Thursday, 22 June 1967, page 1. W.M. Betts Sr. of near Hickory Ridge was shot to death Friday morning on a farm road in the extreme northeast corner of Woodruff County. He was 67 years of age. Edward Lemke, 66, was held on an open charge by Sheriff Ed Hall of Woodruff County. He is free on bail and will appear in Augusta Municipal Court June 27 at 2 p.m. for a hearing. The shooting was about 9:30 a.m. on what is known as the "McDonald Road," which extends from Woodruff County to Tilton in Cross County. Sheriff Kenneth Shaw of Cross County was called to the scene, but the investigation was made by Woodruff County officers, assisted by Woodruff Couty Corner, Charles G. Angelo fo Cotton Plant, Dave Davidson of the State Criminal Investigation Divison and State Trooper Willie Hopper of Augusta. Sheriff Hall told the McCrory LEADER that his investigation indicated that Mr. Betts and Mr. Lemke, though neighboring landowners, had been unfriendly for some time. The sheriff said four people who were in a farm house about 200 yards from the shooting said they heard the shots. The corner reported that Betts was struck in the upper left chest by a bullet which came out at the second rib on the right side. After being shot, he turned and walked about a dozen steps toward his pickup before falling. The shooting was by a .380 automatic pistol. Sheriff Hall said he found four empty cartridges at the scene. Witnesses at the nearby farm house said they believed Mr. Betts was threatening Mr. Lemke with a stick or club. Sheriff said Lemke apparently did not get out of his car until after the shooting. Funeral services for Mr. Betts were Monday morning at Betts Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Jane Boone Betts; six sons, William M. Betts Jr. of Arizona, Johnny, Roger M., Paul D., Lester E. and Calvert W. Betts, all of Hickory Ridge; five daughters, Mrs. Brownie Holmes and Mrs. Juanita Dorsey, both of Arizona; Mrs. Bessie Thompson of Mississippi; Mrs. Audrey Vinson of Fort Smith and Mrs. Virginia Nell Betts of Utah; one brother Isaac Betts of McCrory; eight sisters, including Mrs. Clara Lemke, Mrs. May Lemke and Mrs. Lula Green all of Hickory Ridge.

!DEATH: "Woodruff County Man Is Killed Following Roadside Argument," Augusta (Arkansas) Advocate, Thursday, 22 June 1967, p.1. Augusta Public Library, Augusta, Arkansas. One Woodruff County man is dead and another is free on bond, awaiting preliminary hearing, following an argument and shooting Friday morning, June 16, at 9:30 o'clock. The incident occurred on the McDonald Road in the extreme northeast section of the county. William M. Betts, Sr., was killed, allegedly from the blast of a .380 automatic and Edward Lemke, 66, a resident of the same neighborhood, is being held on an open charge pending a preliminary hearing in Augusta Municipal Court June 27 at two o'clock. Four persons were in a house about 200 yards from the shooting and heard the firearms discharge. It could not be learned whether any of them actually were eyewitnesses to the argument or shooting. Varying reports included one that the two men had not been on friendly terms for some time although their property adjoined. It was reported that during the argument Betts may have attacked Lemke with a stick and the latter opened fire while still sitting in his truck. Sheriff Hall said that he picked up four empty cartridges. One bullet struck Betts in the upper left chest and made exit through the rib cage. Although Sheriff Hall reported that four empty cartridges were recovered at the scene of shooting, only one bullet struck Betts. It was reported that after Betts had been shot he took several steps toward his truck which was parked neaby, and fell to the ground. He was dead when officers arrived, death apparently having been almost instantaneously. Also assisting Sheriff Hall in the investigation were: Coroner Charles G. Angelo of Cotton Plant, Trooper Bill Davidson of Des Arc of the Civil Investigating Division of the Arkansas Police Patrolman Willie Hopper of Augusta and Cross County Sheriff Kenneth Shaw. Funeral services for the victim of the shooting were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Betts Cemetery. He was a farmer and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sarah Jane Boon Betts; six sons, William M. Betts, Jr. of Arizona and Johnny, Roger M., Paul D., Lester E. and Calvert M. Betts, all of Hickory Ridge; five daughters, Mrs. Brownie Holmes and Mrs. Juanita Dorsey of Arizona, Mrs. Bessie Thompson of Mississippi, Mrs. Audrey Vinson of Fort Smith and Miss Virginia Nell Betts of Utah; a brother, Isaac Betts of McCrory; and eight sisters, Mrs. Minnie Smith of McCrory, Mrs. Ina Borough and Mrs. Mary Eggman both of Indiana, Mrs. Edith Buckley of Ohio, Mrs. Bessie Southall of California, Mrs. Clara Lemke and Mrs. Lula Green all of Hickory Ridge.

!DEATH: "Lemke Held to Circuit Court After Hearing," Augusta (Arkansas) Advocate, Thursday, 29 June 1967. Augusta Public Library, Augusta, Arkansas, p.1. Edward Lemke, 66, held on an open charge since June 23 at the aftermath of a fatal shooting on McDonald Road, in the extreme northeast section of Woodruff County, was bound over to the Woodruff County Circuit Court during a pre-trial hearing in Municipal Court at Augusta Tuesday. Charges still have not been filed and Lemke remains free on bond. A number of witnesses for both the prosecution and defense were called during the pre-trial hearing. Municipal Judge J.F. Daughtery ruled that the defendant should be bound over to circuit court. The next session of Woodruff County Circuit Court is scheduled to open on July 21 at which time the docket will be set. Judge Elmo Taylor will preside. William M. Betts, Sr. was killed June 23, about 9:30 a.m., allegedly from the blast of a .380 automatic fired by Lebke [sic]. Coroner Charles G. Angelo of Cotton Plant ruled that the death was almost instantaneously. Bett's body fell on the roadside, only a few feet from where the shooting allegedly took place. Sheriff Ed Hall, who investigated along with officers from Cross County and the Arkansas State Police reported that four empty cartridges although only one bullet struck Betts. Reports from people in the neighborhood indicated that the two men, who owned adjoining property, were not on friendly terms.

The executor attaches the final Bank statement and the cancelled checks as evidence of the proceedings of the Bank account.

It is shown and the court finds that Elbert R. Miller, Clerk of this court if entitled to Clerk's fees and costs in the amount of $67.50 and the executor is ordered and directed to pay said fees and costs.

It is shown that the executor has administered personal property of the estate in the total value of $7,900.67 and he suggests and agrees to a fee of $359.00, which is some less than he is entitled to under the statute. The Court does fix and allow to Walter H. Davis, the executor, the suggested fee of $350.00, and does order and direct the executor to pay said fee from any funds available for that purpose.

The executor states to the court in his report and account that W.J. Dungan, an attorney of Augusta, Arkansas, was employed at the beginning of the administration to do and perform all legal services connected with the administration, and that such services, and some additional serices, have been performed. The court is advised that the attorney and the executor have agreed upon a fee of $1,800.00 is full compensation for the entire legal services to the estate, and the court finds this sum is some less than is provided by statue. The court approves the agreement between the attorney and executor as to the amount of the attorney's fee and does fix the sum of $1,800.00 as the fee to W.J. Duncan and the executor is ordered and directed to pay said fee out of any funds available for that purpose.

The court does accept the report and account of the executor filed on this date and finds that it is in all matters of form and substance in compliance with the law and the orders of the court.

The court does order that the report and account be passed to March 11, 1968 for the statutory notice by the clerk and for possible exceptions, and does set the report and account down for final hearing thereon on the said date of March 11, 1968.
