A close examination of William Bickner's probate papers reveals that he was married twice. In the distribution of 4 October 1659, it is revealed that he had three children by his first (not named) wife: Samuel aged 13 years, John aged 11 years, and Sarah aged 8 years. By his second wife, Martha Metcalf, he also had three children: Joseph aged 5 years, Benjamin aged 3 years, and an unnamed child of 3/4 years (9 months old). ....
The Middlesex Court decided, in this 4 October 1659 distribution, that the eldest three children be disposed "to the care and government of such persons as this Court from time to time allow and approve, untill they come of age.... Pursuant to this, the Court, in a record of 2 October 1660, ordered that the widow, Martha Bickner, deliver to Thomas Goold, John Bickner's portion of his father's estate, and to John March, Sarah Bickner's portion of her father's estate. It is assumed that Thomas Goold and John March had, prior to this, been appointed by the Court as guardians to these Bickner children. ....

supporting data

  • Martha Metcalf Stow
  • Birth: Mar. 27, 1628 Norwich, Norfolk, England
  • Death: Dec. 26, 1717
  • From contributor Ken Smith:
  • Martha was born on March 27, 1628 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, the daughter of Michael Metcalf and Sarah Elwyn. Her father was hounded out of England because of his religious beliefs and the family traveled to New England in 1637. They settled in Dedham, Massachusetts. Martha was married to Willaim Bignell about 1655. Martha and William had three children, all born in Concord, so it seems that they settled there after the marriage. William died on Aug. 16, 1659. A couple of years later, after the wife of Nathaniel Stow died, Martha and Nathaniel were married in Concord on August 20, 1662. Nathaniel and Martha had three children of their own. Her second husband, Nathaniel, died in 1684, but Martha didn't marry again. She lived in Concord as a widow until her death on December 26, 1717. She is buried with Nathaniel in the Old Hill Burying Ground in Concord.

I think, the Rose, of Yarmouth, from Yarmouth, Apr. 1637, he calls hims. 45 yrs. of age, and w. 39. "From the relig. tyranny" exercised by Wren, then Bp. of .Norwich, he felt forced to esc. even at the expense of separ. from his fam. for a time, and emb. at London, 17 Sept. 1636, for N.
