His family returned to Cherryvalley in the early 1930's where he attended grade school at Cherryvalley District #57. He did not go to high school, instead he went to work to help his widowed mother. In 10,1946, two weeks before his 17th birthday, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea. He was honorably discharged in March 1948. He re-enlisted in 11,1949, where he served in Okinawa and was honorably discharged in 3/1953. While working with the Missouri Conservation Commission,1957-1962, he completed his high school studies by correspondence. He has worked construction work, International Union of Operating Engineers Hoisting & Portable Local #513, started this job in 1965. He has served as County Commissioner, District #1 of Crawford County. He was a member of Lebanon Lodge #77, A.F. & A.M., serving as Master in 1976;a 32 degree with the St. Louis Valley Scottish Rite; Martha & Mary #364 O.E.S., serving as Worthy Patron in 1974; V.F.W. Post # 6479;D.A.V. Chapter #65; American Legion Post #?. During their married life, they have lived at various places, including Junction City, Ks. & the Missouri towns of St. Ann, Keysville, Waynesville, Ashburn, Salem and back to Steelville. They lived on the Homeplace near Cherryvalley that they have named Spicewood Springs because of the springs & the spicewood growing there. His hobbies were hunting, fishing & metal detecting. They both enjoy being outside in the garden and yard, working with flowers and watching birds, the plain beauty of God's creation. They especially love to have their grandchildren visit them.
