About William "Billy" McFate
According to family tradition, William fled Ireland after assaulting an English landlord. He settled briefly in Monongalia Co., Va. [now southwestern Pennsylvania}, and then in 1802 purchased his homestead, Tract 1829, in what is now Manhoning Twp., Lawrence Co. On it he built the two-story sandstone house which two generations of his family occupied. He was naturalized in Mercer, Pa., June 15, 1809. William McFate was a farmer, and occasionally drove cattle to Harrisburg for sale.
