About William Bloom, Sr.

DAR#A011445

Wilhelm was the first of 16 children. He immigrated with his grandfather and parents to the US when he was 7 months old on the ship "Two Brothers".

One of, if not the earliest settlers of what is now Curwensville, PA. There are now literally thousands of people with roots in Clearfield Co., PA who can trace their lineage back to him. There are many stories which have been passed down, one of the most remarkable was the following: When William Bloom came to Clearfield Co. it was in the fall. He was accompanied by John, Elizabeth and Benjamin. They built a cabin on what later became the Irwin Farm. William left the children there while he went back to Centre Co. to get the remainder of the family, however he got snowed in and was unable to get back until spring. The cabin had a bear skin for a door. Some Indians happened onto the cabin during the winter and they fed the children and looked out for them until their father's return. I was given this story about William Bloom Sr. and wanted to pass it on. Thank you, John Macomber.***

A story handed down by tradition is 'when William Bloom was called to the military service, two men came to notify him. While he was getting his things together to go with them, his wife cast bullets for his muzzle loading gun and after he left, she went to the field to continue the plowing with an oxen team', this was often told by James Ross Caldwell, his grand-son.
