William Bloomfield

The William and Minnie Story (taken from Minnie's memoirs):

William (Will) met Minnie (Moma) his wife in New York City in June 19th,1920 where she was working as a bookkeeper for an interior decorator and was friends with a cousin of will's (Mary Kastelonsky?). They had heard about each other from friends & family before they met. Will had been working in Texas for 4-5 years but was returning to NYC for a visit and staying in the Bronx. Moma was helping Will's cousin Lilly find shoes in NYC & invited her for lunch at her room (she paid 50 cents to have Lilly over for lunch on a Saturday). Will called looking for his cousin, but was polite & invited Moma to join him & his cousin Lilly for dinner in China Town. At 1st Moma refused, but Will urged & she went.

They dated for a while until Will got cold feet & moved to Pittsburg where he had aunts & cousins in the wholesale produce business. He had been a bachelor for 33 years determined never to marry before he met Moma. His aunt told him to go back to NY & his Minnie or he'd never be happy if he didn't. The corresponded by mail almost daily. Moma also wrote him a letter "thanking him for teaching her the meaning of real love. Until then she had mistaken infatuations for love, but this time it was the real thing. She told him she would never love any other man ever again." A weeks / months later he wrote back & told her he was coming back & wanted to marry her.

Will wanted to go directly to City Hall, but Minnie refused to get married without her brothers & their wives present. Will did not want to wait & did not understand why she cared, but they waited a week until her family could be present. She wrote that in his family they were not as close so he could not understand her need to have them there.

They were married on Oct. 23rd 1920, four months & four days after they met! So much for a long engagement!

   On their honeymoon, Minnie met her mother-in-law in NH, whom she liked and whom convinced them to move to Lakeside NH (now part of Laconia) were they ran a grocery store, about 9-10 miles away from Will's parents grocery store. Will's grandmother was still alive back in Europe & was pleased to hear about their marriage.
