About William H. Bloy
Accident 18 occurred April 1. Captain William Bloy was at the bottom of the Red Jacket perpendicular shaft of the Calumet and Hecla mine, ready to ascend to the surface, when instead of calling to the men only a few feet from him to give the signal to hoist the bucket, he rang the signal himself. Before he could get into the bucket it started to ascend. The Captain caught hold of the rim of the bucket with his hands and was hoisted up the shaft about one hundred and fifty feet, when unable to hold on any longer he dropped to the bottom of the shaft and was instantly killed.
