• ' William Brereton, 2nd Baron Brereton of Leighlin was born on 28 February 1611.1 He was the son of Sir John Brereton and Anne Fitton.1 He was baptised on 8 March 1611 at Gawsworth, Cheshire, England.1 He married Lady Elizabeth Goring, daughter of George Goring, 1st Earl of Norwich and Mary Neville.1 He died circa April 1664.2 He was buried on 21 April 1664 at Brereton, Cheshire, England.2
• ' He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Brereton of Leighlin, co. Carlow [I., 1624] on 1 October 1631.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cheshire between 1661 and 1664.1

MD c1672. Brereton settled on a plantation in the folk of Wicomico & Passadike Creeks in SOmerset Co. which contained some 500 acres of the tract called "Smith's Adventure." THe patent for "Smith's Adventure" (containing in the whole 1000 acres) was granted in June 1667 to Col. Samuel Smith, of Little Wiccocomoco, Northumberland Co., VA, and a "full half" thereof deeded by the said Smith on June 8, 1672, "for and in respect of the love and affection which I beare to my son in law William Brereton, of Wiccomoco, afsd., and Sarah, his now wife,...to the said William Brereton and Sarah, his wife, and the heirs of the said Sarah, forever (Somerset Court, Deed Liber O3, p. 116. In May 1676, Samuel Smith conveyed to "My son in law Peter Presley, Junior, of Northumberland Co., Va., the remaining 500 acres of "Smith's Adventure" tract-Deed Liber O5, p. 25-9). Mrs. Sarah Brereton was probably the daughter of Colonel Samuel Smith. William Brereton evidently first settled on coming to Somerset Co. on this "Smith's Adventure" tract; though at the time of his death he appears (by his will) to have been living on a plantation called "Brereton's Chance" in Somerset. Brereton is found frequently in the records as a party in various transactions, and appears as one of "his Lordship's Justices of the Peace" for Somerset in the commission of June 1676. He continued as a member of the court to the year 1690, being of "the quorum" of the court from 1687. In 1689 he was one of the coronors for Somerset Co. [Appendix IV on p. 393: 1689-1690-William Brereton (Somerset Court, Judicials, Liber EFG, 1689-90, p. 19; and Judicials, 1690-1, p. 12)]. It is quite clear that William Brereton's sympathies lay with the "Associators" Provisional Government which continued him in office. In June 1690, Brereton was named High Sheriff of Somerset Co. Somerset Court, Judicials, 1690-2, p. 12] in succession to William Whittington, who was removed by the court because of his steady resistence to the provisional government. The will of William Brereton, dated Sept. 4, 1690, was probated Nov. 11, 1690, when his wife Sarah qualified as executrix. Brereton named "my friend Francis Jenckins, Gent., to oversee and look over my papers books and be an assistant to my wife after my decease. [Will of William Brereton, and executrix bond, etc., Somerset Judicials, 1690-2, pp. 53-54 and 112-113.] An inventory of the estate of Mrs. Sarah Brereton, deceased, was made Oct. 11, 1703, and an account of her estate returned by William Brereton, administrator, April 12, 1705. William Brereton and Sarah, his wife, had issue [birth dates from Somerset Court, Liber IKL for Hannah, Judith, John, Thomas, & Sarah): (1) William Brereton, who inherited the "Smith's Adventure" tract. "Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of MD: A Study in Foundations & Founders," Clayton Torrence; Westminster MD: Family Line Publications 1992, reprint of Whittet & Shepperson, Richmond VA 1935; p. 131 It is incontrovertible that adherents to the Church of England-"Churchmen" tried and true-came into the Manokin section of this Eastern Shore of MD settlement at the very beginning. When, late in the Fall of 1661 or early Spring of 1662, the Manokin section of this settlement was made, "Churchmen" were first on the ground. Randall Revell & John Elzey, the two resident members of the commission named for establishing settlements in this area, were, with their families, adherents of the Church of England. So, no doubt, were the majority at least of the first planters at Manokin, and the white indentured servants brought in by them........between 1663 and 1666 came....Somewhat later the BRERETONS, Askews, and Cottmans, settling to the north and south of Wicomico (now the Creek), came with their "Churchmanship." p. 137 In the fork of the present day Wicomico and Passerdyke Creeks there settled, probably about the year 1675, one WILLIAM BRERETON, from Northumberland Co., VA. The Brereton family was one of distinguished connection with church and local administrative affairs, as well as social life, in Northumberland Co, and this tradition followed William Brereton in his life in Somerset in MD. The tract of land on which he settled in Somerset Co. [bordering on both Wicomico (at that day called the river) and Passerdyke Creeks] was one of 500 acres out of a larger grant called "Smith's Adventure," patented in April 1667, by one Colonel Samuel Smith, of Little Wiccocomoco in Northumberland Co., VA, and deeded by him in June 1672, to "my son in law William Brereton, of Wiccocomoco afsd and Sarah, his now wife...and the heirs of the Sarah forever." William Brereton had evidently married Sarah, a daughter of Col. Smith, and on coming to Somerset in MD to live, simply exchanged one "Wiccocomoco locality" for another. When Brereton and his wife came, with their elder children, to reside in Somerset, their family was but half complete. After their arrival the records give entries of the births of several more children. It is the record in regard to the first child born to this couple after their settlement in Wicomico Hundred, Somerset Co. that concerns us here. "Hannah Brereton ye daughter of William Brereton was born at Wiccocomoco the ninth day of February of Sarah his wife Annoq Do^m one thousand six hundred Seaventy six and baptized the third day of June following by Mr. John Fransele at Wiccocomoco in ye County of Northumberland in Virginia. [Somerset Court, Liber IKL, p. 17, for record of birth & baptism of Hannah Brereton. Rev. John FRANSELE, who baptized Hannah Brereton--"at Wiccomico in ye Co. of Northumberland in VA," remains a mystery. Goodwin, "The Colonial Church in VA, Part II, A List of the Colonial Clergy from 11605-1785, gives no referance to any clergyman by the name of John Fransele. However, the rector of Fairfield Parish, 1672-1702, and Boutracey Parish, 1690, in Northumberland Co., VA, was Rev. John FARNIFOLD. Fransele may be perpetuated misreading of the name Farnifold. The Rev. G. MacLaren Brydon, Doctor of Divinity, historiographer of the Diocese of VA, whom we consulted in regard to solving the mystery of John Fransele, could throw no light on the matter. It may be, however, that Wicomico Parish, in Northumberland Co VA, had at the date in question a temporary minister by the name of John Fransele, the record of whose service is now lost. It is worth noting that in after years part of this tract of the Brereton home place (including the house tract) on the north side of Wicomico Creek (present designation in 1935), became part of the dwelling plantation of the Rev. Alexander Adams, for 65 years (1704-1769) rector of Stepney Parish. This old and interesting place, on which Hannah Brereton was born, and later the Rev. Mr. Adams' house, is now (1935) the home of Doctor George W. Jarman, a vestryman of Somerset Parish. This place is situated about 5 miles north of Princess Anne. Immediately south (and across the Creek) from the present house on this Brereton-Adams-Jarman place is the site of an old Chapel of Ease of Stepney Parish, called "Goddatd's Chapel" erected c1710 prior to July 1711.] "Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of MD: A Study in Foundations & Founders," Clayton Torrence; Westminster MD: Family Line Publications 1992, reprint of Whittet & Shepperson, Richmond VA 1935; p. 143 The second of the records of baptisms by Mr Huett is as interseting as the first[John Huett-"Father Founder of organized Church of England in Somerset, identified as a son of the Rev. John Huett (1614-1658), of St. Gregory's by St. Paul's, London. Rev. Huett arrived in Somerset after May 1680 & by Jan 1680/1]: "Thomas Brereton ye fourth son of William Brereton & Satah his wife was born at Wiccococomoco on the Easterne Shore March ye Seaventh A^o D^o 1682/3 being Wendsday about 12 of ye Clock at noone & was Christened at Wiccocomoco aforesaid by Mr. Huett ye 25th day of March in ye same year. [Somerset Court, Liber IKL, p. 18.] The Thomas Brereton baptized by Mr. Huett was a younger brother of that Hannah Brereton whom we have before learned was carried by her parents, faithful and loyal Church people, from Wicomico in Somerset Co., MD (where there was at that time no minister of the Church of England), to Wicomino in Northumberland Co., VA (the old home of the Breretons), there to be baptized by a minister of the Church. In July 1689, the "Associators" seized the government, taking possession of all records. Lord William Brereton was the 2nd Lord of Leighlin, Ireland. He inherited the title from his grandfather at the death of his father, John. William was not born in Ireland and he did not die there, simply inherited the title. He and his wife Elizabeth had 10 children: William, Henry, George, Thomas, Margaret, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, and Frances. The last five daughters did not marry.

There is a question as to a possible 11th child John. Much has been written about John who was a Vicar of St. Mary's in Beverly and raised by his supposed uncle, Captain John Brereton of Nantwich, the brother of this Lord William Brereton. John (the supposed son) was a Puritan and the rest of his supposed family were Royalists of either Catholic or Anglican beliefs. When this William had financial problems due to the civil war some have stated that John who was leaning toward becoming a Reverend gave up his possible link with this family. He was promised a living with his Uncle Captain John Brereton, raised by him and became the Vicar he had wanted to become. So when his older biological brothers died he was in line for the title; however he had given that right up when he was sent to be raised by his uncle. Rumor has it that this William's younger sister, Elizabeth had destroyed any possible paperwork that could link John to this William due to his religious beliefs.
