About William Bruton

JAMES BRUTON was likely the son of WILLIAM BRUTON b abt 1630-1640 of Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA, wife unknown. Died 1703 or shortly thereafter. More research to come.

WILLIAM BRUTON appears in Surry Co VA tax records, Lawnes Creek parish, from 1680s until about early 1700s living next to or near JAMES BRUTON.

Children of WILLIAM BRUTON and unknown wife:

James Bruton b abt 1660s Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA m Mary Seward
William Bruton Jr b bf 1693 Lawnes Creek Parish Surry Co VA , as per 1693 Surry Co VA deed showing Joseph Rogers giving a mare to WILLIAM BRUTON Jr, son of WILLIAM BRUTON.

Great X 9 grandfather WILLIAM BRUTON was likely the son of immigrant ancestor JOHN BRUTON b abt 1600-1610 England, who immigrated as headright for JOHN SEWARD Sr, coming to Isle of Wight Co VA in 1635, and was a tenant farmer/planter, indentured to John Holmswood/Holmwood in Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA by 1652. Wife unknown. JOHN SEWARD Sr was the great grandfather of MARY SEWARD who married JAMES BRUTON in about 1680, Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA.

William Bruton/Brewton Sr b abt 1630-1640 prob Isle of Wight (later became Surry Co VA) died abt 1703, m Unknown. 1683 Bacon's Rebellion shows WILLIAM BRUTON on a list of militia from Surry Co VA as well as a JAMES BRUTON, likely his son who was born in the 1660s. In 1687 they were both listed again as militia, regiment of foot, in Surry Co VA. WILLIAM BRUTON Sr had a son WILLIAM BRUTON Jr, as per a 1693 Surry Co VA deed from JOSEPH ROGERS, giving WILLIAM Jr a mare. WILLIAM BRUTON Sr may have had a son GEORGE BRUTON (unverified) who witnessed the 1727 will of JOHN SUGARS in Isle of Wight Co.It appears from tax records that WILLIAM BRUTON Sr did not own land in Lawnes Creek Parish Surry Co VA until after 1680, which would have been after his son JAMES married MARY SEWARD, who received land from her uncle ROBERT CAUFIELD in 1691 as per his will. Neither WILLIAM BRUTON Sr nor JAMES BRUTON appear in Surry Co VA tax records before 1680. Source: Surry Co VA tax lists, deeds & court records.
