About James HUTCHENS Bruton, I

James Bruton b abt 1669-1670 Lawnes Creek Pariah, Surry Co VA d 1735 Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA as per his will; m Mary SEWARD, daughter of William SEWARD and Elizabeth CAUFIELD or COFFIELD. Elizabeth was a daughter of WILLIAM CAUFIELD and DORCAS unknown, immigrants to VA who also settled in Surry Co VA, see below.

Great X 7 grandfather WILLIAM BRUTON was the only son of JAMES BRUTON b abt 1660s Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA and MARY SEWARD, daughter of WILLIAM SEWARD and his first wife, ELIZABETH CAULFIELD/CAUFIELD.

JAMES BRUTON & MARY SEWARD were likely married around 1680-1690 in Surry Co VA.

JAMES BRUTON appears in Surry Co VA tax records from about 1680s until early 1700s, as far as I've researched, but he certainly lived on the same land from the time of his marriage until his death . Although I have yet to find deeds, the land was most likely given to the couple by WILLIAM SEWARD, as the earlier Brutons were clearly NOT a landed family until JAMES married MARY SEWARD. More research to come.

JAMES BRUTON Will proved 1735 Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA; Left to daughter Elizabeth 5 shillings; to daughter Mary Kae (Kea? Key?) one Negro girl Jusy, and her increase; and if Mary should die Jusy would go to Mary's son Bruton Kae (Kea?Key?). To grandson John Kae, negroes, etc. To daughter Ann Jardin (Jordan), one Negro boy Daniel. To son William, two Negroes Plimoth & Steven. To grandson James, three Negroes Jim, Hannah & (illegible). He left to his wife Mary two old Negroes who after Mary's death were to go to son William. His executors were son William & wife Mary. To daughters Mary and Ann, a cow apiece. No mention of lands or other property.

JAMES BRUTON & MARY SEWARD had the following children, all born Surry Co VA:

William Bruton b abt 1690s d 1739 m 1st) unknown, 2nd) Sarah Binns; as per Surry Co VA; children by 1st wife: James Bruton & possibly George Bruton; by Sarah Binns: Mary, Martha, Sarah, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Bruton b 1690s-1700 m unknown, possibly died young?
Mary Bruton b abt 1704-08 d bf Nov1778 Surry Co VA as per her estate inventory; m Charles Kea or Kae; children: Bruton Kea/Kae b abt 1725 d 1776: estate inventory May 1784 Surry Co VA m Sarah Slate, John Kea/Kae b abt 1727 died 1762-1765 Edgecombe Co NC, Mary Kea/Kae m Jesse Bryan/Bryant, Elizabeth Kea/Kae.
Ann Bruton b abt 1705 m William Jordan who died 1764 Surry Co VA; Children as per will of William Jordan: James Jordan b 1710-1720 d aft 1779 Dobbs Co NC m Mary Glover; Jane Jordan m Andrew Savage/Savidge; Mary Jordan m unkown Savage/Savidge, possibly brother of Andrew Savage/Savidge.
New research has recently come to light connecting our ancestor David BRUTON b abt 1736, (who settled with his brother James BRUTON (II) on the Tyger River in what would become Spartanburg Co SC) with this Surry Co VA Bruton family.

James BRUTON of Surry Co VA was a tobacco planter, landowner, and a slaveholder; he is listed on the 1704 Surry Co VA tax list, and his name shows up on several will & estate documents as witness in 1713 & 1721. See Bruton section on Father's Family page for his transcribed will and list of children.
