About William Budge
Newspapers - Colonist 24 November 1871 Page 6
The Late Mr William Budge, of Blenheim.— The Express of November 4th, states: —"The hand of Death once more imposes on us the mournful duty of recording the decease of another old and respected settler, Mr. William Budge, who expired at his residence, Grove Road, Blenheim, on Thursday evening last, after a painful illness. The deceased gentleman has been for many years a resident among us, and may indeed be considered the actual pioneer of Marlborouj»h Province. He came here in 1842 as chief of the first staff of civil engineers deputed by the New Zealand Company to survey the plains of the Wairau, and the country between Cloudy Bay and Queen Charlotte Sound. After a youth and prime of arduous labor he retired from any active participation in public affairs two or three years ago, the infirmities resulting probably from early roughing and exposure rendering him unequal to great exertion His loss will be deplored by his large and amiable family, and a numerous circle of friends. He was interred on Thursday last in the Cemetery, whither his remains were accompanied by a large concourse of old friends, and fellow laborers.
