About William Burnes

Education

William Burness was a poor farmer in Alloway, Ayr when his son Robert was born. He persuaded the local people to subsidise a school teacher, John (James) Murdoch to teach the local children, including Robert and his brother Gilbert. Even from a young age it was noticed that Robert could memorise long passages of text. William also produced a 'Manual of Religious Belief' to help with his sons' education
