About William Stewart Carothers
Known formally as W.S, Carothers, but in the family as "Stewart", he was of course named for the family of his mother, Ann Stewart Carothers. He was born near Concord, North Carolina, and moved with his parents to to Bedford County, Tennessee. He married Jane Hastings, daughter of Robert and Jane Pittman Hastings, in about 1829. He began to acquire land grants in McNairy County in the 1840's, and moved his family there, along with his aged, widowed father, Thomas, near the end of the year in 1848.
