1841 Census - William Chappel aged 25 Occup Nail Maker living Head Head, Hoylandswaine with wife Hannah (25) and 2 sons Joseph (5) and John (2). 1851 Census - William Chappel aged 36 Occup Nail Maker living 54 Haigh Head, Hoylandswaine with wife Hannah (34) and 5 children Joseph (14) (occup Nail Maker), John (11) (occup Nail Maker), Hannah (9), Thomas (6) and Mary (2). 1861 Census - William Chappell aged 49 Occup Nail Maker living Haigh Head, Hoylandswaine with wife Hannah (46) and 4 children John (21) (occup Nail Maker), Mary (11), Sarah Ann (9) and George (6). Death registered - William Chappell aged 54 September q 1866 Wortley 9c 111 Death/Burial - 28th September 1866 William Chappel of Hoylandswaine aged 54. In All Saints Church, Cawthorne Burial Registers 1866 Page 2 No 15. THE LEEDS TIMES December 22 1866 MANSLAUGHTER AT HOYLANDSWAINE CHARLES CHAPPELL, 24, nail maker, was charged with the manslaughter of William Chappell, at Hoylandswaine, on the 24 September, Mr Bruce prosecuted; the prisoner was undefended, - Deceased was uncle to prisoner, and an altercation took place at the Rose and Crown Inn, Hoylandswaine. Deceased's wife came to fetch her husband home, and the latter was then in an advanced stage of intoxication. Prisoner had been challenged by deceased to fight, and appears to have followed his uncle on the road, attacked him, and inflicted injuries which caused his death in twenty four hours. - The jury, after consulting for some little time, found the prisoner Guilty, but recommended him to mercy on the ground of the excessive provocation he had received. - His lordship reserved sentence.
