William Clayton was born in Lancashire, England about 1630 Came to America about 1651. He married Hannah unknown probably in Va.
Richmond Co., Va. was taken from Old Rappahannock Co., Va. Were William Clayton/Cleaton settled on land he bought from William Landman..about 100 acres ..on Totasky Creek. He married Hannah unknown. ( none proven) They had at least two children..William Jr. and Martha who married Abraham Cooke.

William died by 1680 when William Clayton (Jr.) was mentioned as an "orphan". William Clayton Jr. later sold the parcel purchased by his father in 1667. This deed, dated 1689, says "Wm. Cleaton and wife Mary Cleaton of Parish of North Farnham and County of Rappa.", for 2,000 pounds tobacco, sell to Abraham Cooke of same county and parish, fifty acres of land the which land belongeth to my mother’s plantation and (blot) hundred acres of land that she doth now live on and that my father bought of William Landman." William Clayton Sr. had
bought this 100 acres from William Landman in 1667.

Old Rappahannock Co., Virginia Deeds.. between William Clayton, son of William Clayton, deceased, and wife Mary, to Abraham Cooke & wife Martha, from May, 1689, to deeds-out by Abe Cooke in 1690. (the land in these deeds was 150 acres+/- on Totasky Creek, in present-day Richmond County. 100 acres of it was purchased by William Clayton Sr from William Landman, DB8,page 58; & 50 acres belonged to "my mother's ( Hannah) estate", meaning William Clayton, Jr's mother, also noted in DB8,page 58, dated 5/6/1689, recorded 9/4/1689
