William and his parents and siblings crossed the plains in the ill fated Edward Martin's "frozen" Handcart Company of 1856 . There is an excellent account of the extreme hardship and terrible conditions suffered by all who undertook this journey with Edward Martin's " frozen " Hand Cart Company after the 4th September 1856 on the LDS Website and on googling Handcart companies Harold B Lee Library.

William married Emma Louisa Gittins on the 4th September 1864 in Heber City, Utah.

William moved to Idaho between 1885 and 1890, where he farmed .

Fred Bergman is a very distant relative of JMS.

William was the son of Jonathan & Ellen Walmsley Clegg. He came from the Preston area, Lancashire, England and crossed the plains with his parents in the ill fated Martin Handcart Company in 1856. He married Emma Louisa Gittens in Heber City, Utah on 4 Sep 1864. He moved to Idaho between 1885 and 1890 where he farmed.
