Reference: Information on the earliest Cobb families of Southern New Jersey can be found in the records of the Swedish Lutheran Churches at Raccoon and Penns Neck, and related church censuses, wills and inventories, and court records and tax lists or ratables. Another source in the late 1700's and earlyy 1800's are the land deeds of Cumberland County. William Cobb, Sr. and his descendants lived near Raccoon Creek (now Swedesboro) in Southern Gloucester County from the 1680's until about the 1740's. By 1760, the Cobb name had almost completely disappeared from this local and the male members of the family migrated to the Maurice River area of neighboring Cumberland County, near the present-day towns of Buckshutem and Port Elizabeth. Some of the Cobb family still reside to the Maurice River today. No records have been discovered whether William Cobb, Sr. was born in this country, or if he had emigrated here as a young man.
