About William Cockrill
William Cockrell was born before 1710 in King George, Virginia. Likely to Thomas Cockrell and Elizabeth Ann Ramey.
Available records indicate that William Cockrell was in King George County, Virginia in November, 1742 as he witnessed a will at that time. A Virginia Tax List for 1751- 1753 indicates that William Cockrell owned a large tract of land on Carter’s Run in Fauquier County (at least 116 acres). Part, if not all, of this land was left to his wife, Hannah, by her father, Walter Anderson. The land was apparently adjacent to land owned by Jeffrey Johnson whose daughter, Mary, married William’s son, Anderson. It is believed that William Cockrell is buried in an unmarked grave in the Heflin Moffett Cemetery in the Carter’s Run area of Fauquier County (Present day research by others indicate that the cemetery is on a small hill located 2.1 miles north on Route 689 on the left or west side of the road on what is considered the old Allison Farm at 6266 Carter’s Run Road near Marshall, Virginia)
(Note: The Carter’s Run area of Fauquier County is located west of Warrenton between the present day towns of Warrenton and Orlean, Virginia and south of Marshall, Virginia. Also, between 1721 and 1731, the area that became Fauquier County, Virginia was actually part of King George County and from 1731 to 1758 it was part of Prince William County.)

WILLIAM COCKRIL LEFT US AT LEAST 10 RECORDS
- 1 3 Nov 1742: William COCKRIL witnessed the will of William THORNTON of King George County, Virginia. Other witnesses were Elias SHARP and John Hobby. It is interesting to note that Walter ANDERSON and other family members had relationships to the THORNTON family. BrunswickParish, King George County, Virginia Will Book A1 page 153-154.
NOTE: This places William COCKRILL in King George County, Virginia about the time Hannah ANDERSON would be of age to marry. To witness a will William would have been at least twenty one years old, so he would have been born before 1721.
- 2 10 Nov 1744: William COCKRELL of Prince William County, Virginia sold land to John West of Stafford County, Virginia. The land was in Prince William County, Virginia. Stafford County, Virginia Will Abstracts 1729-1748 page 112 found in Sparacio’s works.

- 5 1751-1753: Prince William County, Virginia Tax List show William COCKRILL and Jeffrey JOHNSON living next to each other or at least close by.
- 6 1752-1753: Lease and Release from William COCKRILL to Jeffrey JOHNSON were acknowledged and Hannah wife of said William were privately examined relinquished here right of dower in the lands
conveyed which were admitted to record.
NOTE: This is a great record as it shows that William COCKRILL’s wife was Hannah and it also shows a connection with Jeffrey JOHNSON. William COCKRILL’s son Anderson COCKRELL and Jeffrey JOHNSON’s daughter Mary would later marry.

He married Hannah Anderson about 1738 in Virginia. They had four children: Joseph, Anderson, Elizabeth, and William.
He died in April 1755 in Prince William, Virginia, at the young age of 45.
