WILLIAM COLE (b c1598) and SARAH [COLE] and their descendants

William's parents were Humphrey Cole and Mary Mott
Sarah's parents and birthdate are not known to us

A. William 2 Cole was born about 1598 Tillingham, Essex. He immigrated to America about 1618 on the Neptune and settled in Warwick River Co VA (later Warwick Co). He married Sarah [Cole]; probably at least six children. In 1642 William bought 100 acres in Accawmack Co VA (Northamption Co after 1643), and later moved his family to St Mary's Co MD. He died about 1669 St Jerome, St Mary's Co, age about 71. His will, dated 25 Mar 1659, was proved 17 Jul 1669 St Mary's Co, with his widow Sarah as executrix.

Earlier we thought, as do many researchers, that William first married a woman named Francis, who immigrated to America in 1616 on the Susan. The passenger list of the Susan, however, shows Francis as male, probably a kinsman of William's. While it is possible William did have an unidentified first wife, we now believe that the story of his marrying Francis is most likely a misunderstanding of the passenger list.

  • 1. William 3 Coale, born about 1632 in VA, married Hester [Cole], Hannah [Coale], and Elizabeth Thomas -- see page 6b-4.
  • 2. John 3 Cole was born in VA about 1634. He probably married (--?--) [Cole] before 1655; at least one child. He married Mary Beedle about 1663; probably at least two or three children. We don't know the birth order of all the children. Beginning in 1672, John was a tavern keeper in Townfield, Northampton Co, on the Eastern Shore of VA. He died about 1705, age about 71. We don't know anything about the Beedle family.

William Cole I was the first Cole ancestor in our line to migrate to America. He was born in 1598 in Essex County, England to Humphrey and Mary Mott Cole.He migrated to America in 1618 on a ship called the Neptune and landed in Elizabeth City, Norfolk Co., VA.

From 1618 to 1625 he worked as a farmer in Elizabeth City. In 1625 he obtained an early land grant of 50 acres. In 1628 he moved to the north side of the James River in Warwick Co., VA. He was elected representative for "Nutmeg Quarter" in the assembly that met at Jamestown.

By 1631 he had moved to the south bank of the James River near the Jamestown-Puritan area.

In 1633 he married a girl named Sarah while living in VA and began his family.Being a Quaker by faith, when the religious controls became strict in VA, he moved his family in 1650 or 1651 to St. Jerones in southeastern St. Mary's Co., MD on a farm with 400 acres.

All of William Cole's children were born in VA, but the young Friends (Quakers) were moving north along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

In 1657 his son, William Cole II, moved to Severn about 10 miles from Baltimore, MD.

In 1662 William Cole I, acquired 550 acres in Somerset Co. on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay.Whatever happened to this venture is unknown.Although William visited his children and grandchildren up north, he died at his home in St. Jerones, St. Mary's Co., MD in 1669.
