About William James Cope
It has been established that William James Cope died at "Wogentien" near Heidelberg on 31 January 1899. He and his wife Maria Helena Susanna [Hefer] lived on a farm called "Witelayfontein" near Heidelberg. The farm was confiscated by the British during the Anglo Boer War. He died without a will and Maria had to take in laundry and do housework to support her young family. Maria and her two young children, Beatrice Sarah and William James Andrew were remanded in a British Concentration camp described as Turffontein RC on 28 February 1901 in Johannesburg's southern suburbs. They left the camp 'as a result of not drawing rations' a few months later. William's place of death, "Wogentien", was a German Mission near Heidelberg where William was employed as a clerk/storeman.
