William Deane Courtney
Find A Grave Memorial ID # 92988461
Published in The Times-Dispatch (Richmond, Virginia) on March 28, 1903
After an illness of about eighteen months' duration, Mr. William Deane Courtney, son of Major T. L. Courtney, and a former member of the Common Council, died at 10:45 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, No. 903 West Grace Street.
For many months past Mr. Courtney had not left his room. His condition was such that his friends had been led to expect his death at any time. Recently he grew much worse, and about two weeks ago he hung for days between life and death. He rallied somewhat, and a more hopeful view was taken of his case, but it was recognized that however long he might linger, he could never be well again. Death was a mere question of time. It came peacefully yesterday morning at the hour named.
Mr. Courtney was born January 3, 1856. He attended the Virginia Military Institute, from which he was graduated in 1876. Shortly thereafter he came to Richmond and settled here in business. He married Miss Berkley Archer, of this city, whose father met death in the war between the States. For many years Mr. Courtney was connected with the firm of C. W. Tanner and Company, paint and oil dealers. He served two terms in the City Council. He was a prominent Mason and a member of Dove Lodge, No. 51, A. F. & A. M., of the Knights Templar and the Royal Arcanum. He leaves, besides his father, Major T. L. Courtney, formerly superintendent of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, two daughters, Misses Gay and Berkley Courtney.
To his friends Mr. Courtney was affectionately known as "Deane." He had long been identified with the business interests of the city, and he was held in the highest esteem by all. His death will be mourned by a large number of friends and relatives.
The funeral will take place from Broad Street Methodist Church at 4 o'clock this afternoon. The pall-bearers will be as follows:
Active: Mr. Warren P. Taylor, Mr. William P. Marshall, Mr. Rutherford Rose, Mr. William H. Campbell, Mr. Henry M. Boykin, Mr. Levin Joynes, Mr. Gordon Wallace and members of Dove Lodge.
