Mass for William J. Cowhey, 63, state fire marshal, will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Friday in Queen of All Saints Basilica Catholic Church, 6280 Sauganash Avenue.

Mr. Cowhey, who lived at 6240 Hiawatha Avenue, died Monday night at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Relatives said he suffered a heart attack while driving home on Monday night from the 45th ward Democratic headquarters, 5310 Ainslie Street.

Former Gov. Otto Kerner appointed Mr. Cowhey state fire marshal in 1961. Mr. Cowhey served as alderman of the 41st ward from 1935 until 1947, when he was elected Democratic ward committeeman. He later became ward committeeman of the 45th ward when the 41st was redistricted.

Mr. Cowhey's name appears on the June 11 primary ballot for reelection as 45th ward committeeman and as an alternate delegate to the Democratic National Convention from the 11th Congressional district.

Sidney T. Holzman, chairman of the board of election commissioners, said Mr. Cowhey's name will remain on the ballots.

Holzman said that if Mr. Cowhey is elected to the two posts, the Democratic central committee of Cook County will select replacements.

Mr. Cowhey is survived by his window, Lillian French Cowhey; two daughters, Patricia and Mrs. Maureen Kenny; three sons, William, James, and Emmet; four sisters, four brothers, and four grandchildren.

In private life, Mr. Cowhey was owner of the Cowhey Materials and Fuel company, 5310 Ainslie Street.

A visitation will be held in the chapel at 4553 Milwaukee Avenue. beginning at 8:00 p.m. today. Published in the Chicago Tribune on May 29, 1968.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. from John V. May Funeral Home, 4553-61 Milwaukee Avenue, to Queen of All Saints Basilica. Interment: All Saints. A visitation will be held after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Published in the Chicago Tribune on May 30, 1968.
