William Croke, Esq. of Studley, Oxfordshire, was the youngest son of Sir John Croke of Chilton, Buckingshire and his wife Elizabeth Unton. [1] [2] [3] Based on the sequence of birthdates, his birth was probably around 1575.
Unlike many of his family, who went into the law, William Croke lived as a private gentleman at the estate of Studley, Oxfordshire, bequeathed to him by his brother Sir George Croke. (Although his son Francis, in the 1634 Visitation of London, notes that his father was "of Lincoln's Inn". [1]%29 As Sir George's son-in-law, Sir Harbottle Grimston, wrote of him: "he was a man of a humble spirit, and piously disposed, addicting himself wholly to a country life." [2]
In 1591, at Beaconsfield, William Croke married Dorothy Honywood, [4] daughter of Robert Honywood of Charing, Kent, and sister of Bennet Honywood, who had married his brother Henry Croke. The children of their marriage were: [2]
William Croke made a codicil to his Will on 22 April 1642 and was buried in Chilton, December 1642. [5] although there is apparently no memorial to mark his place.[2]
His wife Dorothy followed him there closely, buried on 10 February 1642/3.[6]
