Robert Thoroton, 'Norwell, Woodhouse and Midlethorpe.', in Thoroton's History of Nottinghamshire: Volume 3, Republished With Large Additions By John Throsby, ed. John Throsby (Nottingham, 1796), pp. 160-164 http://www.british-history.ac.uk/thoroton-notts/vol3/pp160-164 [accessed 24 October 2015]:

John Cromwell, son and heir of William Cromwell, late of Northwell, 1 E. 4. (fn. 10) remised his right in a certain mess. called Parkers Place, and in a tost, and five acres of land, and in a toft and croft and seven acres of land, theretofore called Kendalls lands, and in eight acres and an half of land in the town and fields of Northwell, to Mr. John Porter prebendary of the prebend of Northwell, called Palyshall, and his successors.

All this can be found in the British Dictionary of National Biography entry for Thomas Cromwell, earl of Essex.
The next question is how Walter chose the name Smyth. From some papers I found, and partly photocopied, in the London Society of Genealogy, this was the name of his mother, Joan Smyth and of his grandmother, Margaret Smyth, who was the aunt of Joan. And Walter's aunt Margaret Cromwell married William Smyth, father of Joan and brother of Margaret Smyth.
These same papers, for a year now in the binding room to be re-bound and thus unavailable, give a connection through to Fulker Cromwell, son of Ralph ..."
