Correspondence includes 104 letters received by William Bedlow Crosby during 1802-1830, including 30 letters from Robert Ralston of Philadelphia, 7 from Matthew C. Ralston, 7 from Robert Hudson, and others from Edward Carroll, Kingston, Jamaica; Paul Fearing, Marietta, Ohio; Benjamin Allen, Hyde Park, New York; and William Bedlow Crosby's father-in-law, Rev. William Clarkson. Letters concern family matters, business, title to lands, etc.
Additional items of family correspondence include 17 letters, 1793-1799, by William Clarkson to his brother-in-law, Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge of Litchfield, Connecticut in which Clarkson writes of personal and family matters, religion, mutual acquaintances, health, etc.; series of 7 lengthy letters written by William Henry Crosby to his wife at Rutgers Place, New York City, while on shipboard and travelling abroad in Europe; 3 letters from Hannah F. Clarkson to her sister, Mrs. Harriet Ashton Crosby, and dated from Charleston and Wadmalaw, South Carolina, 1810 Dec. 3-1811 Jan. 29, in which Ms. Clarkson describes in detail her stormy and perilous voyage to Charleston, conditions on shipboard, fellow passengers, social life in Wadamar, news and gossip concerning friends, family, neighbors, etc.; and other items of personal and family correspondence of various members of the Crosby and Clarkson families.
Also included is a personal diary, 1842 Sep. 19-1843, kept at the family home, Rutgers Place, New York, by William's daughter, Mary Crosby, describing her daily life and activities. The diary is accompanied by a volume of reminiscences of Rutgers Place, written by Mary Crosby, recounting family and social life at Rutgers Place during the first half of the 19th century. Also included are assorted poems and translations, a commonplace book kept by Catherine C. Crosby containing poems and extracts inscribed to her by friends, 1824-1827, and family certificates, deeds for New York City properties, releases, and various land, estate, and legal papers 1686-1868
