About William Crump, of New Kent County

Disambiguation

For additional research notes of William Crump of York and New Kent County see:

From http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~flyfamily/genealogy/Crump%20family.html

“Considering the fact that the founder, William Crump’s birth date was 1632, he would have been fathering children about the late 1650s and the third generation of William’s descendants should have been born beginning in the late 1670s. It appears that William was the father of Stephen, William and Richard Crump. There were probably other children including daughters, but nothing is known about them. This article will examine the life of one of his sons, Stephen Crump, and trace some of his descendants. “

notes

1) - According to e-mail received from Carolyn J. (Crump) Rozelle (erozelle.mail.koyote.com>, former editor of the Crump Newsletter:

ALthough it is tradionally stated that Thomas Crump was the original immigrant to America and that he married Elizabeth Buck, , Carolyn states that she believes that the immigrant was William Crump, who was transported to America when he was about 16 years of age, by Louis Burwell, and was refered to by him as "kinsman." She further states that she believes it was Bridget Buck, the widow of a Richard Crump, who married Thomas Crump.

The christening info below is from English records:

  • a) - William Crump chr. 4 Mar. 1629; Westbury on Severn, Gloucester, Eng
  • b) - William Crump chr. 5 May 1600 to Wm. Crump & unknown; Westbury on Severn, Gloucester, Eng

Below is the pertinent William Crump headrights to VA info that I know of:

  • 1647/Jun., William Crump Imported by Lewis Burwell
  • 1648, 12 Jun., William Crump, headright of Louis Burwell

3) - It was also clear from the records that William Crump of York County, before moving to New Kent, lived close enough to Williamsburg that he could obtain his wife's signature for power of attorney and also witness Humphrey Vaulx's assignment of power of attorney to Gerrard Hawthorne and get to the courthouse, all on the same day, May 24, 1660. He probably lived along Queen's Creek, near Williamsburg, where various documents show him engaged in the affairs of Robert Vaulx, until he moved to his holdings in New Kent, probably between 1665 and 1670, in which year he was referred to in a York County document as a resident of New Kent. I would not be surprised eventually to learn that William and Anne in the 1650s and early 1660s were part of Robert Vaulx's household, living on his plantation. This William signed his name sometimes "W" and sometimes "WC", and his wife signed "AC".

Meantime, William Crump of Lancaster County was establishing himself on Corotoman Creek, some 30 miles north of Williamsburg as the crow flies, but because of intervening major waterways a journey of probably 50 or more miles by land and ferry. In Lancaster County records of March, 1662, he is identified as being from "Corotoman Creek in Rappah. River". On February 16, 1663, he was awarded 300 acres for transportation of six persons. (Does anyone know who they were?) According to Joan McNair, this William signed his documents with a full signature, although I have not yet seen a facsimile..

NOTE: "It was previously thought that William J. Crump of New Kent County was a younger son of Sgt. Thomas Crump (1600-1652) and that he married a daughter of Hannah (Boyle) Hill Spelman Mountney. Subsequent research has established that the William Crump, of Lancaster County, VA, who married Mrs. Mountney's daughter, Frances (Mountney) Crump, was not the same person and that William J. Crump of New Kent County, who deposed 24 June 1659 he was aged 27 (York Co. Wills, Deeds, Orders &c3, 1657-62, p. 62), had a wife, Anne, who on 24 May 1660 gave a power of attorney to acknowledge the deed whereby her husband had on 08 Nov 1657 assigned to Charles Woodington his right to 500 acres of a patent for 1000 acres in James City County near the Rickohock path, Kiscohonsicke Swamp and Weckenoskeekicke Swamp issued, 26 Jan 1656/7, to him and Mr. Humphrey Vaulx (York Co. Wills, Deeds, Orders &c3, 1657-62, p. 81r), with year of his assignment written "ffifty one"; Patent Book 4, p. 52 [77], was NOT (my emphasis) son of Sgt Thomas Crump.
