Biography
William Danforth was likely born in England and emigrated to the Colony of Massachussetts. Previous genealogies have provided varying dates of birth:
"William Danforth, of Newbury, 1667, born only 14 years before at London, perhaps was soldier in December 1675, of Johnson's company; by first wife who died Oct. 18, 1678 had no children; by second wife, Sarah Thurlo, had William, Mary, Richard, John, Jonathan, Thomas, Francis, and Joseph."[1]
William was a resident of Ipswich in 1660 and was in the employ of William Pritchett when he accompanied Daniel Black to Rowley "the last day of June, 1660" and carried a message from Daniel to the daughter of Edmund Bridges. The girl came to a neighbor's house where Daniel tried to persuade her to marry him, or, as her father stated "made love to her". The irate father prosecuted the bold suitor for seeking his daughter's hand without his permission and the General Court fined Daniel £5. William had to pay 10/ for helping him in this endeavor! William was in court again on 29 Sept. 1663 giving testimony on behalf of Mr. Pritchett in a land case. He deposed that his age was 22 years.[2]
The second date of 1641 seems to be the mose accurate as this is the age he supplied himself and the later date would mean he married at age 16, unlikely in this time period.[3]
On March 20, 1670 William married Hannah (Kinsman) Danford (abt.1637-1678) in Ipswich.[4][5][6] The couple had at least one child, Mary Danford (1673-aft.1695) before Hannah died in 1678.[7][8]
About 1675 William moved to that part of Newbury that became Byfield. January 7, 1675, he received 2/6 from the town of Newbury for killing a wolf.[9]
William was a soldier from Roxbury in Johnson’s company, having been drafted 1 Dec. 1675.[10]
In June, 1678, William, Edmund Dear, and Philip Welch petitioned the Essex County Court to have possession of money left by William Dorton in the hands of John Ring (Rindge). They stated the Dorton "willed that if he came not to Ipswich in the space of three years, the money should be given to four of his countrymen", namely the three petitioners and Ring. The court found in favor of the four of them. In the same year he took the oath of allegiance.[11]
Sometime before April, 1679 William married Sarah (Thurlow) Danford (1650-1698).[9][12]
In March 1681 he and his "partner" William Longfellow (ancestor of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) were called into court for slaughtering an ox and some pigs which were claimed by Joseph Plumer and Robin Robinson the Scotchman. The court ordered the two of them to pay the value of the animals to Plumer and Robinson.[13] The only other record of William in the town records is the abatement of his tax for the year 1688.
Francis and Ann Thurloe, Sarah's parents, deeded land, which Francis had received from his father Richard, to William and Sarah on January 1, 1696/7. They sold this tract of land in 1698. William sold land on 15 July 1709 that had been granted him by the proprietors and he sold a wood lot on 27 Mar. 1721. The deed for the woodlot was signed with his mark of "D" on June 18, 1722 and this is the last record of William Danforth.[14][15]
Notes
William DANFORTH, born in 1641, was living in Ipswich, MA by June 1660 and in the Byfield parish area of Newbury before 1675. On January 9, 1675 he received 2 shillings, 6 pence from the town of Newbury "for killing a wolf". In 1678, he took the Oath of Allegiance with other men of Newbury. Then, in March 1681, William was called into court along with William LONGFELLOW, the ancestor of the poet Henry Wadsworth LONGFELLOW, for slaughtering "an oxe and some piggs" claimed by Joseph PLUMER and Robin ROBINSON "the Scotchman". The court ruled in favor of Plumer and Robinson, so William and his associates paid them the value of the animals in question. William married first to Hannah KINSMAN (1644-Oct 1678) on Mar 20, 1670 at Ipswich, MA and secondly to Sarah THURLO, the daughter of Francis, before January 1679/80. The last known mention of William in Newbury records was in connection with a deed dated Mar 27, 1721.

Descendants, says Farmer, are in New Hampshire, and some of them spell their name Danford. Eleven of this name graduated at Harvard, all are male line descendants of Nicholas [2]

Note: In the past, someone connected William as a son of Rev. Samuel Danforth and Mary Wilson. This is impossible. Mary Wilson was only seven years old when William was born, and she and Samuel were married ten years after William's birth.
This relationship has been removed. Please do not add the relationship back without addressing 1. The fact that his supposed mother was only seven years old when William was born; and 2. the lack of any documentation or proof that he was their son.
