William was mentally challenged. It's unknown what, exactly, the nature of his case was. But, according to the 1880 census, it became apparent when he was just 2 years old. Family accounts say that, Sarah Ann Dayton, his mother, spent her life caring for him. Sometime after her passing, William became a ward of the state, ending up at the poor farm in Sumner Township, Webster County, Iowa. Since his gravesite is unknown, a safe assumption would be that he is in whatever served as Webster County's potter's field.
