While the United States is still months away from entering the war, Princetonians have been traveling to Europe to participate in relief efforts and humanitarian missions since the fighting began. PAW notes that two alumni serving as volunteer ambulance drivers in France, Herbert Pell Townsend 1910 and William Stanley Dell 1916, were awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Government for “valor under fire.”
