About William Joseph Dowle
William was a member of the Plymouth Brethren, his 2nd wife Margaret was Church of England. This family left Plymouth on the 29 March 1884 on the Victory. They arrived at Port Chalmers, Dunedin on 29 May 1884. Victory Elcoate was aboard and named after the ship and its captain. William was an engineer and probably came here to work on the railroad.
The family originally settled in Filluel St, Dunedin in a cottage known as the Tylee Cottage. Later they moved to Waipiata in Central Otago where William procured a small farm. He built a homemade brick house on the corner of the main street and the road, left to Patearoa and Styx, and right to Ranfurly and Gimmerburn.
