1820 British Settler

William John Earle 17, Farmer, was a member of Thomas Willson's Party of 307 Settlers on the La Belle Alliance.

Party originated from London.

Departed London, 12 February 1820. Arrived Table Bay, Cape Town on 2 May 1820. Final Port - Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth May 1820.

Area Allocated to the Party : Beaufort Vale on the Bush River

Marriage is given at Wilson's Party, Beaufort Vale, Cape.

Chemist, apothecary, druggist, schoolmaster. On passenger list aged 19 as a farmer but in 1821 set himself up as a chemist in Bathurst; then 1825 he was a schoolmaster at Bathurst Grammar School. 1830 saw him as a postmaster in Bathurst village and in 1832 the Bathurst agent for Grahamstown. Probably these occupations were part-time.

In 1834 he moved to Grahamstown and became postmaster of Grahamstown in 1836. In 1846 he owned a soda water factory in Grahamstown and sold the chemist business to his son-in-law Robert Read. Moved to Port Elizabeth in 1850 and started another chemist's business ( Clarence D Taylor from Albany Museum). There are various adverts for him in local papers.

Listed as an apothecary, chemist and druggist in 1834.

"Adjoining Mr. EARLE's new Apothecary Shop, Bathurst Street Has on hand best Foolscap, Post Paper, Gilt do., black bordered, copying paper, copying ink, blotting paper, music paper, slates and slate pencils, sealing wax, account books, Memorandum books, drawing pencils, drawing books, portfolios, blotters, camel hair pencils, colours, wafers, pen-knives, pencil cases and scissors.
