That part of Florence Co. where William lived in his later days was part of Marion Co., SC until late 1800's, then became part of Florence Co., SC. A new stone (in memory of) has been placed at Zion Cemetery, Horry, SC in 2014 by their GGG-grandson, Keith Edwards. Exact burial unknown, but might be buried at Salem Cemetery, Florence Co., SC unmarked (?)

William Edwards was born in Wayne, Co. NC in the Mt. Olive community to his parents (believed to be the son of Barnabas Edwards). He married Rachel Roberts about 1846. In 1850 William was employed by the Wilmington Roanoake Rail Road (WRRR). They relocated about 1855 to Horry, SC (Aynor area where he would remain for nearly 20 years) & started a turpentine business (Wm. purchased 305 acres in 1863 on Chinners Swamp (where Aynor Elementary is on Jordanville Hwy, Aynor, SC). There was a great demand for naval store during the WBTS 1861-1865. Around 1870 William & family relocated to the Pee Dee SC area in what is now Florence, SC. Rachel died about 1872 & he then married Martha Parker 1840-1914 (from Marion, now Florence Co., SC). Wm. sold 305 acres in 1873 & may have helped to pay off the land owned by wife, Martha (?) Several underaged children went with him including: Henry, Mary, Martha & Rachel (& Doctor F. went later to live nearby) in Florence County. His grown children remained in Horry (Gabriel, Wm Monroe, James W. & John) Oldest son Barnabas would end up in Georgia. William is probably buried at Salem Meth. Cem. in the Pee Dee section of Flo. Co., SC, beside wife Martha (with no cars in 1894 it would have been very difficult to bring his body back to Horry for burial). William & Rachel have their name on their son's (Gabriel) footstone at Zion Cemetery in Horry, SC erected in their memory. Wm. & Rachel have a small stone at Zion Cem., Horry, SC near son, Gabriel Edwards.

Bartell vs. Edwards A copy of Wm. Edwards' will is posted here where wife Martha Parker Edwards transferred a 304 acre plantation in his name with Martha having a lifetime right. William then drew up a will leaving the said land to his children from a former marriage at Martha's death. It was contested in court by his 2nd wife's family (naming Sarah Bartell & others vs. Barnabas Edwards & others). Barnabas was the oldest child of Wm & Rachel & representing the Edwards Family. The outcome is still unknown, but very likely the Edwards family won the case. It is still unknown exactly who acquired the land.
