William Eldredge was the son of William, and grandson of Robert Eldredge.[1] He was born about 1698 in Harwich.[citation needed] [2]
William married Thankful (Crowell) Eldredge on 29 March 1718 in Yarmouth, Barnstable County.[3]
In 1743 in Harwich, William Eldridge was reported to be a Quaker. The object of the inquiry was to exempt such from ministerial rates.[4] He was a deacon of the New Light or Separatist (later Baptist) church in Harwich which was organized in 1749. Joshua Nickerson was minister of this church in 1753 and brought a suit against Solomon Kendrick in court to determine if Nickerson was entitled to a tax exemption as a minister. In the documents are listed the members of his church including William Eldredge's family: William, Reuben, Isaac Jr., Sarah, Bridget, Thankful and Jemimah.[5]
William Eldridge of Harwich South Precinct, husbandman, wrote his will 06 March 1758 in which he named his wife Thankful, three sons Reuben, William Jr. and Isaac, youngest son Thomas Eldridge; daughter Sarah, wife of Manoah Ellis; daughter Jemimah Eldredge, unmarried; daughter Rebeckah Cahoon; daughter Thankful wife of Joshua Nickerson; daughter Bridget wife of Benjamin Small Jr. Son Reuben named executor. The will was proved 23 May 1782,[6] and inventory of his estate was taken on 17 April 1782.[7]
