Biography

William Eldred is reported to have been a resident of Yarmouth, Massachusetts from March 3, 1645, to 1667. The exact circumstances of his childhood and immigration are unknown. Several men named Eldredge (a.k.a. Eldred and Eldridge) appeared in New England between 1635 and 1645, so naturally it has been conjectured that some of them are related. It particular, it is widely asserted that William was a brother of Robert Eldredge of Yarmouth and Monomoy.[1]

William was appointed constable in Yarmouth in 1657, 1662, 1674, 1675 and 1677. He was also surveyor of highways.[2][3]

He is reported to have married a daughter of William and Tamesin Lumpkin[4], with many sources claiming she was Anne. The estimated marriage year varies between 1645 and 1647.[5]. Torrey places it by 3 March 1645/6.[6]

Children commonly ascribed to William as "certain" are

Anne, b. in Yarmouth, Dec. 16, 1647/8.[7] Sarah, b. in Yarmouth, Oct. 10, 1650/1[8] Elisha, b. 1653 [- 1739] Bethia In addition to these, the following are believed to have been his children:

5. Jehoshaphat, d. 1732. His wife was Elizabeth. Children: Edward, b. in Chatham, July 17, 1702 (m. Mary ___, and... 1730, leaving two children, Mary and Anne), Nathaniel, Elisha, Elnathan, Ebenezer, Barnabas and Elizabeth. 6. Samuel, m. Keziah Taylor. Eight children. [1655 - 1706] 7. John [1654 - 1728]"[2] These may also be his sons:

Joseph Eldredge William Eldredge Jr.[9] The Yarmouth vital records record that the wife of William Eldredge was buried in November 1676, but unfortunately, she is not named in the record.

Research notes

It has been claimed that William Eldredge was the son of Thomas Eldred (1595-1640) and Anna Watson Eldred (1595-1642) of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. This appears to be merely a guess -- no documentary evidence is known, and the will posted on Thomas's profile mentions no son William.

This profile originally seemed to suggest that William immigrated to the New World in 1645 (due to language from a GEDCOM import). The source given was Passenger and Immigration Lists Index from Ancestry.com. This index in turn references Colket.[10]. Colket in turn references sources that just place William in Yarmouth in 1645. Until other evidence surfaces, it remains the case that William's immigration circumstances and even his status as an immigrant are still uncertain.

The statement declared in many sources as bald fact that William married Anne Lumpkin, daughter of William and Tamesin Lumpkin, seems to be based solely on the fact that William Lumpkin named two grandchildren Elisha and Bethiah Eldredge in his will and process of elimination in determining their parents (there aren't many other Eldredges who make good candidates for the father or daughters of William to be good candidates for the mother). Savage[4] is careful enough to say he had never seen Ms. Lumpkin's forename.

No record of Sarah, Elisha, or Bethiah names father William Eldredge nor any mother, so the evidence for this parentage is still circumstantial. The certainty seems based on the assumption that their father was an Eldredge living in Yarmouth around 1645-1655 and assuming the only possibilities were William or Robert. Sarah was born before the recorded marriage of Robert to Elizabeth Nickerson, so is assigned to William. It is known that Robert married Elizabeth Nickerson. Since no known marriage of William is known, yet the will of William Lumpkin of Yarmouth names grandchildren Elisha and Bethiah Eldredge, it is assumed that William was their father. Elisha's birth year can be estimated from his grave marker as 1653.

The following list of children appears unsourced and handwritten in "Genealogical Notes of Cape Cod Families":[11]

Mary Sarah 1650 Ann 1648 Elisha 1653 Jehosephat 1658 Samuel 1655 John Bethia Ezekiel This source repeats the claim that William was brother to Robert and husband of Anne Lumpkin.

NOTE: Birth and Death years are approximate. Name variants are Eldred, Eldridge, and Eldredge.

It has been mentioned that Cemetery Transcriptions from the NEHGS Manuscript Collections show he and his wife are buried in Bethel Cemetery, South Chatham,MA. However, I cannot find this reference in that collection. And the earliest burial in that cemetery is 1831.... so he may be buried elsewhere.

He was possibly the son of Thomas Eldred (1595-1640) and Anna Watson Eldred (1595-1642) of Ipswich, Co.Suffolk, England. Other sources indicate he may have been the son of Robert Eldred and Anne (Graham) Eldred of Winfarthing, Co.Norfolk.

Early historians of the Massachusetts colonies reported that the immigrants, Robert (of Yarmouth and Monomoy,MA), Samuel (of Cambridge,MA and Stonington,CT) and William Eldred, were brothers, but later research indicates that Samuel was not a brother of the other two.

William is recorded as a resident of Yarmouth in 1645 and probably at that time had been there for several years. It was about 1647 when William married Anne Lumpkin. William and Ann settled down near her parents beside a brook later called Eldred's Brook in what is now the town of Dennis. The property adjoined that of Thomas Howes.

William Eldridge was appointed constable of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, in 1657-62-74-75-77; was also surveyor of highways in that town.

Children: Anne Eldredge, Sarah Eldredge, Elisha Eldredge, Bethia Eldredge, John Eldredge, Samuel Eldredge, Jehoshaphat Eldredge, Joseph Eldredge, and William Eldredge Jr. It is questionable whether there was a son named Thomas.
