About William Ellington

Birth: Aug. 28, 1782 Virginia, USA Death: Oct. 11, 1835 Gilmer County Georgia, USA

Son of David Ellington Jr (son of David Ellington Sr and Martha Ann Tucker) and Jerusha Fowlkes (daughter of John A. Fowlkes and Sarah Jennings Fowlkes).

William was the seventh of ten children. When he was eight years old (1790), his family moved to Wilkes County, GA. In 1804, William moved to Kentucky to become a Methodist minister and was ordained on September 16, 1805 by Bishop Francis Asbury. He was then appointed to the Licking Co, Ohio District in the Western Conference of the Methodist Church.

At the age of 25, he married Priscilla Duvall on Aug 28, 1807 in Rushville, Fairfield County, Ohio. They returned to Georgia in 1809, settling in Jackson County where they remained until moving to Gilmer County in early 1834. William Ellington is listed in 1820 census of Jackson Co, GA; he & his wife are age 26-45; 1 daughter, age 10-16; 2 sons & 2 daughters, age under 10. He is not listed in 1830 census of Jackson Co, GA. William Ellington appears on the special June 1834 census of Gilmer Co, at which time the total white population of Gilmer County was 369. William is credited with preaching the first sermon in Ellijay during the summer of 1833.

Oldest son Lewis Duvall Ellington settled about seven miles east of Ellijay on the Cartecay River. Along with other Methodists in the area they began worship under a brush arbor; their first sermon was preached by William Ellington. In August of 1834, the first Cartecay Methodist Church was built on the property of Lewis D. Ellington (the original cemetery for that first church is about one-half mile down Roy Road from the current Cartecay UMC).

Children of William and Priscilla were:

1) Jerusha Ellington b. 1808 2) Lewis Duvall Ellington b. 1810 3) Coke Asbury Ellington b. 1812 4) Sally Ellington b. 1815 5) Elizabeth "Betsy" Ellington b. 1817 6) William Burdine Ellington b. 1821 7) Salina H Ellington b. 1823 8) Jerome Fletcher Ellington b. 1827 9) Priscilla Jane Ellington b. 1834

In household of Coke A. Ellington in 1840 Gilmer Co census are two young males whose ages match those of William Burdine & Jerome Fletcher Ellington. William Burdine Ellington is in his own household in 1850 census. No further information has been found on Jerome Fletcher Ellington.
