Please join this project on FTDNA -Maelanfaid is an ancient, early medieval Irish and Scottish name that first appears in the annals and manuscript genealogies around 700 AD. It is Gaelic for Prince or Chief of the Storm. There was also a Saint Maelandfaid circa 600 AD at Molana-Dairinis abbey, Ireland

The Scottish names Macaloney, Maloney, McAlonie, McLoney, MacGillonie are anglifications of Mac-Maelanfaid. The Irish names Malanaphy, Malamphy, Molamphy, Mellamphy, Mullamphy, Melaniphy, Molanphy are anglifications of Maelanfaid.Other Maelanfaid names include Cameron, McMartan and McPhee. . Fitzpatrick was on the long list of surnames as well

The ancestors of many modern-day Scottish, Canadian & U.S., Aussie / NZ., Macaloney's, McAloney's, McAlonie's changed their name from McAlonan, McAlonen when they left Northern Ireland in the 1800's, where they had been 'Ulster-Scot planters'. It is believed these people, and also he Antrim Moloney's/Maloney's 'Irished' their name from Macaloney etc to McAlonan, Moloney, Maloney etc., after they moved from Lochaber, Scotland (some via Islay) to Northern Ireland, and then back to Macaloney etc when they left Northern Ireland. Therefore, many McAlonan's / McAlonen's and Antrim Moloney's / Maloney's are also Maelanfaid.

The Cameron, McMartin, MacMartin, McPhail, MacPhail, McBean, MacBean, McBain, MacBain, McSorley, MacSorley, McSorlie, MacSorley names originating from Lochaber, Scotland are recorded in the Gaelic MS 1467 AD as being of the blood-line of Clan Maelanfaid. MacNabs also appear to be related. -

Lovey Fitzpatrick - daughter of Thomas Fitzpatrick who was a son of William (died 1764) who came from Ireland, told descendants of her sister Karen Huppock Fitzpatrick (who married James Pugh) that her father was descended from Sir John and Lady Ella Fitzpatrick (see Earl of Ossory).
[Ed. this could not be true because Sir John 1st Earl of Upper Ossory was born after William. They may have been related, though. A Lady Ella Fitzpatrick in mentioned in a letter by Horace Walpole - and there was an Arabella Fitzpatrick aunt of Sir John of Ossory].

William was not the son of Sir John of Upper Ossory. but Laurence John Fitzpatrick /

pg 2 & 3

There were said to have been three sons of the above William Fitzpatrick, Thomas, Joseph and William.

From Mrs. L. L. Lea, Lovingston, Virginia as of June 30 1950:
William Fitzpatrick born in Ireland-died 1764 in Abbemarle Co., VA. (will found in book 2 page 168 and 176). He with three sons or more and other Fitzpatricks came about 1720 to Pennsylvania. His sons were Thomas, who died 1767: Joseph who died 1774: and William. This family came over with the Scotch Irish from North Ireland, probably around Belfast and were of the Presbyterian Faith.
William (I) with his family and others came down into Augusta, Rockbridge, Orange, Albemarle and Fluvanna counties Virginia. The wife of William (I) was Sarah - said to have been a sister of Alexander Breckenridge of Breadolbane, Scotland. William's will is in Abermarle County, Va. In it he mentions wife Sarah, leaves everything to her with son Thomas as executor. William (I) made deed to his son Joseph for 400 acres of land in Albemarl co. Va. Berfore 1762.

From another source we find that:

The Fitzpatricks were in Augusta co., Va., by 1737. The seem to have come in with Alexander Brecknridge who came about that time with a large band of Scotch-Irish. They landed in Pennsylvania first, then came down to Augusta County and took up lands. The Fitzpatricks allied with the Breckenridges at an early period. There were several Alexander Breckenridge Fitzpatricks. In 1750, thomas, William, and Joseph Fitzpatrick were in Albemarle co., Va. having corssed over the Blue Ridge Mountains with other Scotch-Irish pioneers.
Thomas Fitzpatrick in Albemarle Country was buying and selling land at 500 acres at a time. A William Fitzpatrick, wife Sarah died in Albemarle Co., Va., in 1762-date of will. A John Fitzpatrick signed the Albemarle Declaration of Independence. Several Fitzpatricks were listed as Revolutionary War Militia.

1744 Born in Virginia. Goochland County. 1777 William Fitzpatrick, the father of Benjamin serves in the as a lieutenant in the third South Carolina Regiment.Because of valuable service rendered, he is presented with a sword. 1779 Was an executor of his father's will in Fluvanna County, Virginia. 1784 Was in Greene County Georgia with his brothers, sisters and mother. 1786 Greene County GA was settled, and the two clear streams, the Apalachee and Oconee Rivers constituted the boundary line between civilization and barbarism, the Creek Indians occupying the territory to the west. 1786(April 17) Benjamin Fitzpatrick of Fluvanna County VA attorney for William Fitzpatrick of the state of Georgia, to John Depp of Powhattan County: land in Fluvanna County, 400 acres on branches of Briery Creek, and branches of Cunningham Creek. (Witnesses, Robert Wright, P. Napier, Ezekial Perkins, William Barnett). (Volume II, pages 127-8. deed recorded April 6, 1786) 1795 Morgan County settled. He served 19 consecutive years in the Georgia Legislature from Greene County, according to genealogies of the family.According to State records (see below) that he served between 1785 and 1804, but with breaks.Another account states that he served in the South Carolina legislature. The records of Jasper (then Randolph) County Georgia show that a William Fitzpatrick died about 1809, with Joseph the executor, and with items being left to his wife, Anne. It would seem, then that he had moved to Randolph County before he died, and that the William Fitzpatrick mentioned in Greene County (wife Tabitha) was another person. "Biographical Directories" states that Benjamin, William's son, was born June 30, 1802 in Greene County, Georgia, and that he was left an orphan when he was seven years old, which would have been 1809. 1807 Died according to the deed book of Jasper (formerly Randolph until 1812) County, p. 17. 1823 Another William died in Greene County. His sons and daughters migrated to Alabama before it was a territory, buying land in 1816 and settled in present Montgomery County, near what is known as Pickett Springs on the lower Wetumpka Road. Their quarters were a quarter mile northwest of this spring. According to the account by Stannie Fitzpatrick, the older brothers came first to St. Stephens, the first capitol of the Alabama Territory, thence to the above location. Benjamin and Alva settled down there; Bird and his sister, Nancy, settled near Union Springs and Joseph with Celia Fitzpatrick Baldwin and Phillips Fitzpatrick in what became Fitzpatrick Alabama. This from the Georgia Department of Archives and History: According to our General Name File, William Fitzpatrick served as Clerk of Court from Washington County in 1785 and from Greene County in 1786. He served in the House of Assembly from Greene County 1787-1790, 1797, 1803-1804. He represented Greene County at the state constitutional conventions of 1789 and 1795.He was a justice of the peace from Greene County 1786-1799 and Justice of the Inferior Court of Greene County, 1789-1792, 1796-1805. His children went with their families to Alabama, and most settled in the area known as Pickett Springs on the Lower Wetumpka Road in 1816. The cabins were a quarter mile northeast of this spring. My maternal grandfather, Lieutenant William Fitzpatrick, whose name is on the roll of honor in the lineage Book, 1901 Volume 5, 1993-94, was in the Third South Carolina Regiment. He was presented with a sword for the services rendered at Savannah, where he was wounded. His wife, at great personal risk, carried over the country on horseback, valuable government papers which were delivered safely at Savannah.Information concerning the ancestors Phillips and Kimbro is more meager. There are certified copies of their receiving valuable tracts of land, as a reward for their distinguished services in the Revolutionary army.(Sarah Baldwin Bethea.)
