About William Logan Fox
1880-05-03; Paper: Philadelphia Inquirer
"SUDDEN DEATH OF A MILLIONAIRE
Mr. William L. Fox, president of the Foxburg and Clarion Railroad, and son of the late Dr. Samuel Fox, of this city, died some days ago on a railway train under peculiar circumstances. He had taken the cars from Olean, N. Y., to go to Clarion, in this state, to give evidence against a peddler named Clancey, who had shot a conductor named Cheitner, one of Mr. Fox's particular friends. He was to take with him the revolver used by Clancey. After the train had started Mr. Fox found he had forgotten the weapon, and stopped the train while he went to his house to get it. He returned out of breath and dropped into a seat, where, after the train started agin, he was found dead.
Besides being president of the railway on which he died, Mr. Fox was at the head of several other extensive interests in the oil regions. His own wells produced twelve thousand barrels a month. He was on the Republican electoral ticket for the Twenty-fifth District of Pennsylvania, and chairman of the Republican County Committee. He was a man of education, having graduated from Troy Polytechnic Institute, and his early death at the age of twenty-five is lamented by the entire community. His fortune is estimated at three millions. Its foundation was laid by his father, who was a wealthy Philadelphia manufacturer, and purchased a thousand acres of land in Clarion county among the oil wells."
