About William Frank
Considered one of the four "Pilgrim Fathers" of the Pittsburgh Jewish community.
William Frank arrived in New York City on May 1, 1840. Frank was a man independent in spirit, hard-working, and frugal. Granted U.S. citizenship in 1846, when he moved to Pittsburgh.
In 1847, purchased land for the Troy Hill Cemetery, the first property owned by any Jewish religious or social body in Pittsburgh. Started the Hebrew Benevolent Society also in that year.Operated a dry-goods business called Frank and Wormser (with Ephraim Wormser). Under the same name, the two pioneered in glass-making, producing bottles for liquids and medicines. One of their early customers was Henry J. Heinz, who came to Frank for containers to bottle horseradish.
Played a large role in laying the foundation of many organizations which helped shape the Jewish community of Pittsburgh.
