William was a Subaltern in the Lancers and that he was killed during a Polish rising which I think would have been before 1863.(This is incorrect and comes from letters written in the mid-1900's). He retired, lived in Manor Petrovo went through a long legal battle with the state and finally died in 1859 from a heart attack.

I also had information many years ago from Dr Hugh Torrens who was from a University in England and studied British artisans who went to Russia.

Dr Torrens said that William "left the Institut fur Wegeingenieure as an Engineer-Lieutenant in 1829 with his brother Richard".

Additions 18/1/2011. After finishing at the Institut fur Wegeingenieure in 1829, he returned to England and there married (name unknown). By 1833 he had returned to St Petersburg, with Nadia his daughter. Became a surveyor specialising at least in railways, water distribution and roads. Was instrumental in building the ponds and islands of the new Peterhof palaces and gardens. At one stage he owned a portion of Holguin Island which was repurchased by the State Treasury in 1845. Known to have built two houses numbers 42 and 46 on Petersburg Avenue opposite the gardens entrance. No 46 became "Hotel Samson" with a German Chef on 27/11/1839. No 42 became "Dom Truveller" from which his daughter Anna Vasilevna married and lived in perhaps for a while. She and her husband Petr Nicolai Cheremisinov rented it to various businesses. On 7 February 1834 he married Anna Ivanova Wullf (recorded in the British Chaplaincy) but she died in childbirth on 26/9/1835. About 1839 he married Maria Vladimirovna Kozlyninova. Three children. Vladimir Vasiliovich b. ?1841 Anna Vasilievna b. ?1842 Sophia b. 15 April 1846

By 1856 the family was living in Manor Petrovo, Borovichsky county, Novgorod province, where the painting of the two daughters was made (see Anna notes)
