About William John Gallwey

GEDCOM Note

Biography ==By chance William was born in Ireland as a result of the death of his uncle Michael (Gallwey-99) and the need for his father to return to Ireland to sort out the affairs of the family. William travelled to South Africa as an infant with his parents. Later he attended Downside College, Bath, England for almost five years but completed his studies ata "cram" school in London to matriculate. On his return he acted as Secretary to the Chief Justice O'Connor for two years and was admitted as an advocate on 31 Oct 1887. He was a Lieutenant in the Natal Carbineers in the South African War where he captured the first Boer prisoner and was himself the first prisoner of the Boers having been capturedon 18 Oct 1899 after being thrown from his horse and knocked unconscious. He was in prison camp with Winston Churchill in Pretoria and did not have a good word to say about him. He also served with Umvoti Mounted Rifles in the Zulu Rebellion of 1906. After living at a number of houses in town he bought a small estate of about 100 acres about 6 km on the Durban side of Pietermaritzburg (now the heart of a modern housing estate). For a financial dismeanour he was struck off the roll in about 1908 (about the time his first wife died from a burst appendix) and went to work at Kentani in the Transkei to recruit labour for the mines. He returned to Pietermaritzburg in 1914 and lived at a number of addresses but finally died from bronchitis while visiting family in Durban. His second wife died in the 1918 flu epidemic. He is buried in the Commercial Road (now Albert Luthuli Street) Cemetery In Pietermaritzburg close to both his wives and his father.
