(III) William, son of Benoni and Mary Gardiner, was born at Boston Neck, Rhode Island, 1671, in Narragansett. He was known as William Junior to distinguish him from his uncle, William Gardiner, who called himself "son of George Gardiner of Newport," and died in 1732.

He married Abigail, born in 1681, daughter of John and Abigail (Richmond) Remington, of Newport, Kingston, Rhode Island, and granddaughter of Edward and Abigail (Davis) Richmond. They lived on Boston Neck, South Kingston, R.I., where their seven children were born.

For some reason not understood at the present day, William Gardiner was called "Wicked Will.""

After the death of William Gardiner, of Boston Neck, Dec. 14, 1732, his widow married Captain Job Almy.

biography

WILLIAM GARDINER, 3 (Benoni, 2; George, 1), was born in 1671, and died in 1738" (1732?). In 1712 he was admitted a freeman. In 1708 William Gardiner, "Cordwainer," and Abigail, his wife, sold to John Watson seventeen acres of land near "Pettaquamscutt Rock." His will, written April 12, 1732, was probated February 12, 1738. He mentions his wife Abigail, his grandson Josiah Arnold; his son John, to whom he gave the homestead farm of five hundred acres; his son Sylvester, to whom he gave eighty acres and fourteen hundred pounds; his grandson Amos Gardiner, giving him three hundred acres, partly in North Kingstown and partly in South Kingstown, also land in Westerly; his grandson William Gardiner, giving him three hundred and fifty acres, west of the three hundred acres given to his grandson Amos Gardiner, provided that William make over to his son John all his rights in the homestead farm, called "ye Middle Bonnet," containing forty acres; his grandson James Gardiner, giving him three hundred acres; his granddaughters Abigail and Elizabeth Gardiner, giving them one hundred pounds; his daughter Abigail Robinson, giving her one hundred pounds to be laid out in plate to be marked with his name and his wife's. He gave also seven hundred pounds to his daughter, Hannah MacSparran, one hundred to be laid out in plate; fifty pounds to his grandson William Hazard, and an Indian boy named Jeffrey to his grandsons Robert Hazard and Caleb Hazard.

In 1705 William Gardiner and his wife Abigail sold to Henry Gardiner28 two hundred and fifty acres of "land that had belonged to his wife's father," bounded west by Saugatucket River, south on Thomas Mumford's land, north on that of said Henry Gardiner, and partly by that of William Gardiner, Sr., and the fresh meadows. This is the land in Moorsfield, South Kingstown, a part of which is still occupied by descendants of Henry Gardiner. William married Abigail Remington, a daughter of John and Abigail (Richmond) Remington. She married, second, September 3, 1740 (when she must have been over fifty-nine years of age), Colonel Job Almy, of Newport. She died February 6, 1763, in her eighty-third year, according to the tombstone record in the Episcopal Churchyard on Tower Hill. The notice of her death reads: "She was a pleasant tempered woman and a member of the Episcopal Church." "Col. Job Almy was a wealthy, reputable Merchant and a man of remarkable generosity of spirit. He and his first wife were Quakers." In her will, Mrs. Almy mentions "Son John, daughter Abigail Robinson, Son Sylvester Gardiner and Mary Gardiner, grandson Josiah Arnold, granddaughter Anstis Robinson, granddaughter Abigail Updike, granddaughter Abigail Stewart and granddaughter Mary Dockray."
