Dan, et al,
Am sending your lineage list to Catherine, a computer contact for the Garland Bend group, I recently - last Sunday- got into contact by our meeting her at the reunion. I understand Beverly Garland in Midland, Texas, has computer access but did not get her email address, couldn’t talk to her long enough, before other people got her attention.

1 William Garland

----------------------------------------

Birth: 1755-1760, probably NC

Death: 2 Oct 1827, Darlington District SC

Burial: Lydia, Darlington County, SC

Father: John Garland Sr. (~1724->1800)

Mother: (?) Elizabeth

Revolutionary War soldier, first with the North Carolina 10th Regiment of the Continental line (1781-1782), then with Gen. Marion's South Carolina 1st Regiment (1782) in and around Charleston SC.

The DAR Patriot Index has the following entry: Born 1755-1760, d 1827, Married Lydia Cooley, Pvt, SC.

William's final service in the Revolution concluded in the fall of 1782 in South Carolina. The South Carolina Act contemplating bounty land to veterans had passed in 1778 and the final ordinance authorizing grants passed in 1784. William seems to have had a definite incentive to shift his Revolutionary service from North Carolina to South Carolina where bounty land would be his reward. He married a SC bride, Lydia Cooley, about 1785. The Cooley family lived in part of the Cheraw District later to become Darlington District, so he seems to have chosen that specific location to settle down and make a claim for bounty land, the first of which he received in 1793. Meanwhile, sons, Jesse, and possibly another arrived in the family before 1790 giving him further incentive to sink his roots where he was.

It is said that William had a brother, John, of Wayne County NC, who is the grandfather of Governor Augustus Hill Garland of Arkansas.

In 1790 Cheraw District (preceded Darlington) SC census, there is a household listing for William Garlant (note mispelling), males >16 one, <16 two; females one.

1800 Darlington County census shows following household: males 26-45 one, <10 three; females < 10 one, 26-45 one.

1820 Darlington household census: males 10-16 two, >45 one; females 16-26 one, 26-45 one.

William's will, written August 7, 1827, recorded October 2, 1827 reads as follows:

WILL OF WILLIAM GARLAND

1.1 William Garland Jr. (?)

----------------------------------------

Birth: ~1786, Darlington District SC

The existence of this probable firstborn child is not firmly established. In the 1790 census of the William Sr. family, there were two males under age 16 ... Jesse and presumably William, Jr. In the 1800 census, there were three .. Jesse, Joseph and presumably, William Jr. There was no 1810 census record, but William Jr. was not found in future reccords, except for an War of 1812 enlistment in Darlington District on September 24, 1814 (as a substitute for William Parnell) by a William Garland. It is speculated that this son died from some cause during the war.

Burial: White Plains Baptist Church; Chesterfield SC

1.3a Joseph Garland*

----------------------------------------

Birth: abt 1794, SC

Death: 12 Jan 1871, Vernon Parish, LA

Burial: Glass Window Cemetery, Vernon Parish LA

Household present in 1820 Darlington County census, males: 16-26 one, <10 one; females 16-26 one. Though it was speculated that Joseph and family went to Alabama in perhaps the 1830's, where his wife, Eliza, died, this early trip is probably not true. Listed in Darlington 1840 census as head of household with following members: male: 40-50 one, 15-20 two, 10-15 one, 0-5 one; female 20-30 one, 0-5 two. Listed in Darlington District 1850 census with second wife, Sarah and 7 others in the household. Joseph filed for insolvency in Darlington July 4, 1851. Then went to Calcasieu (later Vernon) Parish LA. Seems to have made some effort to change his identity after arriving in Louisiana, i.e., commencing to use the first name "Jasper" and describing his origin as Alabama when he appears in the 1870 Calcasieu Parish census. Nonetheless, his lonely gravestone bears the name "Joseph Garland".
