He married Aeltje Verdon, daughter of Thomas Verdon and Aariantje Sebring, at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 23 May 1740.

occupation

A mariner, he was admitted freeman of New York City on 20 November 1739. He is identified as "Junior" at the baptisms of his children in 1740, 1746 and 1749. William Gilbert, Junr. was appointed onr of the City's public measurers on 22 March 1741/42. He was fireman for the West Ward on 7 March 1755 and on 28 May 1761. On the poll list of Feb 1761 he is listed as William Gilbert, Jr. His father's will of 1769 left him a house and lot on Prince Street where his father then dwelt. ~• source: James A.
