Mr. W. C. Gildersleeve, was a pronounced and fearless Abolitionist who operated one of two Underground Railroad stations in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Here he hid runaway slaves in his home and store, secretly transporting them at night to the next station on the Underground Railroad. He at one time was mobbed and ridden on a rail through the streets of Wilkes-Barre, for sheltering fugitive slaves in his home. He lived to see slavery abolished. He was born and raised in Liberty county, Ga., and through his mother, who was a Norman, was connected with some of the leading slave holding families of Georgia. He was a half-brother of Thomas Quarterman. [2]
