(Note from Jack Hartsell: When the Blackhawk and "Sack" Indian uprising took place in 1832 it seams that the whole area went into panic....The men went off to War (in this case in Cass Co. the men mustered together in Niles but went no further) & the womwen, children & old men gathered together at one neighbors farm, armed them selves with pitch forks, etc. and waited for the uprising & Indian raids, which never came. William Griffis along with the other men in the area went off to fight the Indians.

						MRS SUSAN GRIFFIS

Mrs. Susanna Griffis died last Thursday morning in the 83 year of her age. She was one of the early settlers of Volinia Township and was an industrious, honest woman who bore her full share of the hardships and privatations incedent to pioneer life. She raised a large family od children that grew to manhood and womanhood, who with a large number of grandchildren and great grandchidren and a large circle of friends moren her departure. She was buried at South Wayne Cemetery last Saterday afternoon.
Their home was a little SE of the Thomas Griffis house on the slight raise of ground. As a girl my mother liked to walk there and spend the day. Susan would go out and ketch a chiken and kill and dress it and fry it for dinner.
My great aunt had a long obituary of hers, so with the knowledge of her death date one might be able get it by search at the Dowagiac library. They have old newspapers on film there. And I have been told the South Haven library has a Morman room. Susan never seemed to want her picture taken. One day when here, my grandmother had made arrangements for one of the Newton Huff family to come that afternoon and use my mothers cambra and take their picture while setting She was buried on March 15, 1889 in South Wayne Cemetery, Wayne TWP, Cass Co, MI.
