Notes: Bailie’s party of 1820 settlers. DN 9695/1848. CO48/41 p. 356. William served for two years at the Cape after its capture in 1795 as Cornet, 28th Light Dragoons. After his marriage to Jane Matson he lived for a time in Netherbury, Dorset. He was made Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in January 1812, and commanded the 2nd Garrison Battalion. He sold out after the war, but the total failure of his business affairs led to his accepting a cornetcy in the Royal Waggon Train in May 1815, on half-pay. He applied to emigrate in 1819 from Lambeth, Surrey; two of his children (Elizabeth and George) accompanied him on the ship to South Africa while his wife stayed in England with 4 of their children.

1820 Settler to South Africa with Bailie's Party on the Chapman.
