About William Hearne, Jr.

William Hearne (24 Sept 1688 - 1756), landowner and planter, son of William and Mary ____ Hearne, inherited one third of father’s estate. On 5 Mar 1712/3 William Hearne purchased 200 a. from James Harris of Somerset Co. The land, two tracts taken from Harrison’s Adventure and Venture, on n. side of Pocomoke R. and westernmost side of main br. of Dividing Cr., was paid for with 11,500 lbs. of tobacco. William Hearn, planter, and Elizabeth, his wife, made a deed on 25 Sep 1713 for the two tracts, 200 a. called Venture, ‘for and in consideration of land called Adams Garden,’ to Thomas Williams, Sr., his father-in-law, of Annemessex Hundred. Adams Garden, purchased for 4,000 lbs. of tobacco 19 Apr 1693 from John Atkins, was transferred 25 Sep 1713 by Thomas Williams, Sr., planter, and his wife Frances, to William Hearn. The 100 a. tract ‘with all and singular houses housing courts yards gardens Orchards’ was on w. side of Marumsco Cr. Judicial records indicate that William Hearne witnessed a bond in 1713, and in 1718 entered into a lawsuit against Thomas Layfield of Somerset Co. In 1724 he witnessed will of Thomas Cox, Sr., in which he received the ‘priviledge of my spoon moulds during his life time.’ The tax lists for 1724 and 1739 include William Hearne in Wicomico Hundred, Somerset Co.; in 1739 two of his sons, Isaac and John Hearne, and one slave called Moll (fem.), were living with him in Household #700. On 19 Aug 1730 William Hearne purchased from Thomas Layfield, Gent., and Catherine, his wife, 425 a. of Stanes (Stains), originally patented in Somerset Co. by Col. William Stevens on 2 Jul 1682, for 10,000 lbs. of tobacco. His brother, Thomas Hearne, purchased half of tract (425 a. on westernmost side) for same amount. William Hearne witnessed will of Nicholas Ready on 7 Jan 1732. William Hearne m., before 25 Sep 1713, Elizabeth Williams (b. Somerset Co. ca. 1690), dau. of Thomas and Frances (Robinson) Williams, and had issue: (1) Elijah, ca. 1710; (2) Isaac, before 1722; (3) John, before 1718; (4) Benjamin, ca. 1729; (5) Samuel, ca. 1730; (6) Jonathan, ca. 1737; (7) Hannah; (8) Mary, m. John Freeney (Freney, Freny, Freeny) …; (9) Sarah, m. Charles Tindall (Tindell). In 1754 Elijah and Samuel Heron, and Negro Moll, were listed in William Heron Sr.’s household. William Hearne d. in 1756, naming all nine of his children in his will… Elizabeth Herne appeared 17 Mar 1756 to verify inventory as a true and just account.
