William H. Hellmuth, eighty years old, a retired merchant, and president of the German Co-Operative Building Association, No. 5, died unexpectedly at 10 o’clock last night at his home, 108 North Alfred Street. He died in his sleep and a heart attack is ascribed as being responsible for his demise. Mr. Hellmuth had been in failing health for a long time, although he appeared to be unusually active and well prior to retiring.
The deceased was born in this city and a son of Louis Jacob Hellmuth and Katherine Bossbach Hellmuth both of whom were born in Eescheim, Baden, Germany.
Mr. Hellmuth for a long number of years was engaged in the grocery and meat business with his brother, Charles T. Hellmuth, and upon the latter’s death several years ago he retired from active participation in the business affairs. Mr. Hellmuth conducted a meat stand in the city market. He was founder of the firm of Hellmuth Brothers.
For several years the deceased served as a member of city council from the third ward and he was responsible for a general improvement in the city fire department, including purchase of new equipment.
The deceased was actively interested in city affairs and was affectionately known to his many friends throughout the city as “Uncle Billy.”
Twenty-five years ago the deceased was elected a member of the board of directors of the building association. In 1922 was chosen president, which he continued to serve to his death. The deceased was the husband of the late Bettie Folmar Hellmuth and is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mary H. Crismond of this city, two sons, Everett A. Hellmuth of this city and William F. Hellmuth of Washington, and a granddaughter, Miss Evelyn G. Hellmuth of Los Angeles, California, daughter of the late W. Earle Hellmuth and also four grandsons.
His funeral will take place at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon from his late residence and services will be conducted by Rev. Elmer F. Leonard, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, assisted by Rev. Carl Goette, York, PA, formerly and pastor of the local Lutheran Church. Interment will be Bethel cemetery.
William H. Hellmuth is the 1st child born in Alexandria, Va to Jacob Hellmuth and Catherine in 1857. His brother Charles Thomas was born in 1859 followed by his Sister Virgina Ann "Annie" in 1862.
Like his father he was a butcher by trade and owned The "Hellmuth Brothers" butcher shop in Alexandria with his brother Charles. After his father passed in 1864 his mother remarried William J Holland of Alexandria in 1865 and she had 4 more children, Albert Holland(1866-1926), Emma(1869-?), Mary "Rose"(1872-191?) and Louis James(1875-1951).
He married Bettie Folmar on Aug 7th 1882 and they had 5 known children Charles Louis(1885-1892), Wilmer "Earl"(1884), William Frederick(1888), Mary Virginia(1890) and Everette Albert(1896).
When the Holland part of this family relocated to Chicago about 1895 the Hellmuth children, now adults remained in Alexandria until death,
