William McDonald Henderson was the eldest of 7 children born to David Glenn and Margaret Ada (Adam) Henderson. He was born in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland and was christened in Old Monkland, Lanarksire, Scotland on Nov. 17, 1833. He derived his middle name from the McDonald clan to whom the Henderson family traces their bloodline through DNA testing. (The McDonald clan was from Glencoe in the Scottish highlands).

William McDonald Henderson was employed in freighting by General Phineas Banning and David Alexander between Los Angeles and San Pedro and later between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. (Banning, whose home is now a museum in San Pedro, played a pivotal role in building the Port of Los Angeles, constructing the first breakwater and dredging the harbor. He ran an extensive network of stage and freight routes that connected the nascent port east to San Bernardino and south to Fort Yuma.)
In 1856-7, William McD. was employed with government surveyors in the official survey of Utah. For many years, he was engaged in freighting, in government work on the frontier and in mining.
In about 1870, he returned to San Bernardino county and for thirteen years was employed in the lumber business in the mountains. Later, he engaged in the mercantile business in Rialto, Ca.
In 1881, he married Mary Winn in San Bernardino, Ca. They had no children.
Mr. Henderson was always interested in the material growth and prosperity of the county, which was for so long his home and was a valuable citizen in every respect.
He died in Long Beach, Ca. on Sept. 11, 1904 and was buried with Masonic honors from the new Masonic Temple in San Bernardino, Ca.

Cause of Death: Cancer of liver
