About William Hendry, Convict "Guildford" 1827
William Hendry was not married to Frances Johnson. He was her short terrm partner.
William Hendry arrived in NSW in 1827 on the ship, Guildford He met Frances Johnson in Parramatta. They had a child out of wedlock in 1831. Henry W Johnston.
It is generally acknowledged that there were inherent benefits for a convict woman to have a child. It offered them an early ticket of leave and easier working conditions. The colony favoured and rewarded a robust colonisation program.
Henry was baptised on 10th Sept 1831 by Samuel Marsden in St Johns Church Parramatta. Although William Hendry's name appears on the Baptism record as the father, Frances decreed that the child would be named with her current surname. When couples we're not married, they had this option. Samuel Marsden spelt Henry's surname as Johnston on the baptism entry in lieu of Frances' spelling of her marital name of Johnson. In attendance at the baptism was Gregory Blaxland, having his Son Baptised, Eliza Blaxland ( Gregory's daughter ) and Thomas Forster were having two of their children Baptised .
It appears that William Hendry returned to England after his sentence was completed or was pardoned sooner.
